CNN President’s Message

Lisa Hershey, RHIA
As the calendar year draws to a close, the CPHIMA Board continues to plan for the remainder of our 2014-15 year including upcoming education sessions in March and June, 2015.
Advocacy Update
On November 25, the YTI Lancaster Campus HIT Students hosted Congressman Joe Pitts to discuss the ICD-10 implementation. The students had written a letter requesting a meeting with him and were delighted when his staff responded that Congressman Pitts wanted to visit their class at the campus. The meeting included PHIMA’s Legislative/Advocacy Chair, Trula Gross and Advocacy Coordinator, Beth Chernoff, two representatives from LGH (Coding Manger and Coding Supervisor), students and YTI HIT Program faculty and Program Director.
Congressman Pitts was well informed and well aware of the HIM profession’s keen desire to see ICD-10 be implemented on October 1, 2015. He stated that he “asked that the delay not be included” in the bill he signed in March, 2014 but that he was denied that request. His message to the HIM profession is that we must change the minds of the 21 physician members of Congress who make up the “Physician’s Caucus.” These are the folks behind the delay movement! Congressman Pitts mentioned the Congressman from Texas who is leading the letter writing campaign as a key individual. There is one physician member from western PA (a psychologist) as well. Trula and Beth noted that PHIMA has reached out to him.
Congressman Pitts supports ICD-10 implementation but warned us that a delay bill could be presented this month or prior to March 31, 2015. Please continue to write, phone and tweet your Congressman!
Overall, the experience of meeting with Congressman Pitts was very positive. He was engaging, interesting, and interacted well with students and others.
If you haven’t done so, please remember to renew your membership for FY2014-2015 and forward this e-mail to a friend or co-worker encouraging them to join as well.
