President's Message

What an exciting beginning to 2013! The Baltimore Ravens began an improbable playoff run that resulted in bringing the Lombardi Trophy back to Baltimore! Their journey to the Super Bowl is not one that began on the first day of the season, nor is it one that, now obtained, is over. The journey started several years ago when Coach Harbaugh challenged the organization to unite from top to bottom, working towards a common goal. Through the years, in spite of personnel changes and loss of key contributors throughout the seasons, the organization never lost sight of their ultimate goal. Like any organization, now that the goal has been obtained, new goals are created, and steps needed to obtain said goals, are defined.

It is through strategic planning that organizations answer the questions “Who are we?” and “Where are we heading?” In early January, our MdHIMA Executive Board, along with some of our Past Presidents, convened to begin answering these questions. The initial session, and subsequent Board meetings, resulted in establishing our new Mission - “MdHIMA,  in alliance with AHIMA, supports and promotes the HIM profession through professional development, education, technology, member engagement, and advocacy of patient privacy, and confidentiality of health information”, and our new Vision, “MdHIMA serves the healthcare industry and public, by supporting and providing resources and services that contribute to producing the highest quality and efficiency within our healthcare system”. Three major goals have been established, and a future meeting is scheduled in order to dive deeper into these goals and identify the specific strategies needed to achieve them. We will be reaching out to our membership to obtain volunteers to participate on one of our teams in effort to develop action plans. Our objective is to roll out our strategic plan during our annual meeting in June.

Nominations for AHIMA Elected Positions Due March 29, 2013

Are Due March 29, 2013

Looking to learn something new or to share your knowledge and skills? Do you have the leadership and governance skills needed for the national level? Do you want to be a pioneer for HIM? If you answered yes to any of these questions, we have an offer for you. Please consider volunteering for AHIMA! Volunteering with AHIMA is a rewarding experience that you simply can’t get on the job or in a class. With so many opportunities available, why not give it a try?

AHIMA is seeking qualified active members to fill the roles of AHIMA President/Chair-elect and three directors for the Board of Directors, and one HIA Educator for the Commission on Certification for Health Informatics and Information Management (CCHIIM) in 2014. Nomination submissions for these open positions can be made through the Application to Serve.  All nominations are due by March 29, 2013. All positions have three-year terms, and all terms begin January 1, 2014.

Before you fill out the application, be sure to take the Volunteer Leadership Competencies Self-Assessment, which outlines the skills and abilities required for AHIMA volunteer leadership positions. The self-assessment explains the core competencies for all volunteers and specifies additional competencies for director, commissioner, and committee chair roles. Descriptions, duties, and qualifications can be found through the Application to Serve Web page. Select Elected Groups to submit your application before March 29, 2013.

Join the many AHIMA volunteers who invest their time and reap the rewards. Gain recognition as an association leader, help recruit new professionals, and show your commitment to the profession. Volunteer for an AHIMA elected position by submitting your application through the Application to Serve by March 29, 2013. Applications must be submitted online or will not be accepted.

MdHIMA Annual Meeting Silent Auction Information

The MdHIMA’s Fundraising Committee is now accepting donations for the Annual Meeting’s Silent Auction which will be held June 13- 14, 2013 at the Baltimore Convention Center. Vendors and MdHIMA members alike can contribute item(s) by May 31, 2013. Items given to MdHIMA, a non-profit 501 ( C)(3) organization, are deductible as ordinary and necessary business expenses under the Internal Revenue Code Section 162. Currently, we are requesting participation from businesses and entertainment groups as well but we’d like to hear from you, our membership.
