Inside This Issue - President's Message, CEUs Available Locally, Open Notes - September 11, 2015:

THIMA President’s Message

Donna CoomesLess than a month away from ICD-10!    In my last message I wrote about all the great success of our ICD-10 grassroots advocacy.  It goes without saying that we will continue to have some work ahead of us as we make the long awaited (and overdue) move to ICD-10 in just a few short weeks.

I want to give a special thanks to the THIMA Coding, Classification, and Reimbursement (CCR) Team.  The CCR team has been hard at work for our association members.  I will mention just a few of things that they have been working on during the past year.
  • Work effort to get THA and TN Department of Health to the ICD procedure code requirement for outpatient claims
  • Collaboration to ensure that Tennessee Workers’ Compensation would accept ICD-10 on October 12, 2015
  • Active participation on the TN payment reform initiative Tennessee Advisory Groups (TAG)
  • Review of AHIMA ICD-10 practice briefs, provide guidance to member coding questions
  • CDI –ICD 10 webinars and ICD-10 BootCamps

The volunteer members of the CCR are Sheretta Anderson, Julie Appleton, Lisa Fox, Gail Garrett, Kathy Hallock, Dana Hitchcock, April Insco, Kim Jones-Huddleston, Tempe Kelly, James Kennedy, Kim Lee, Connie Maddux, Janice Melcher, Joanne Miller, Shawn Scarbrough, Karen Scott, Sherry Stiltner, Misty Watson, Gwen Williams, and Trannie Woodson.  If you know these folks please take a moment to reach out to them and thank them for their volunteerism and commitment to our profession.

Have you had an opportunity to read the AHIMA E-Alert that came out on September 3rd?  I was happy to see that the AHIMA Information Governance Toolkit 1.0 was released!  The toolkit is packed full of great information, including useful sample documents, such as a project plan, Information Governance Charter, job descriptions, and organizational chart.   I hope you take the time to review this toolkit because I am confident that you will find it an excellent source of useful information.

I want to thank the 151 THIMA members who took the time to vote in the AHIMA election that ran from August 3 – 17, 2015.  The AHIMA election average was 10% and the THIMA voter participation was 9.63%.  While I would love to be able to tell you that THIMA had the greatest voter turnaround that was not the case.  THIMA was actually 34th out of the 52 voting state associations for voting percentage and 15th out of 52 for the total number of voting members.

At the end of this month your THIMA executive board will be attending the AHIMA House of Delegates (HoD) meeting to be held Sunday, September 27th in New Orleans, Louisiana.   The 87th Annual AHIMA Convention and Exhibit is September 26 through September 30, 2015 in New Orleans, Louisiana.  If you will be attending the meeting let us know so we can make plans to connect with you during the meeting!

Open Notes participants exceed 5M

The number of patients who can gain access to progress notes from their doctors through the OpenNotes program has surpassed 5 million, according to an infographic and new data unveiled last week. The program, which now includes all VA hospitals as well as private facilities in 20 states, was piloted in 2010 at three hospitals and had a 99% approval rate from patients. (9/8)
