If You Missed the IG Boot Camp

The THIMA/AHIMA IG Boot Camp held on February 12, was an excellent event and a big success! Attendees learned about various aspects of an IG program and shared ideas for promoting / leading IG within healthcare organizations.  

The IG discussion continues at the 2016 THIMA Annual Meeting. The Information Governance Education Track includes presentations by Joe Ponder, Vice President, Information Governance, LifePoint Health, Kyle McElroy, MS-HSA, RHIA, AVP, Health Information Management IASIS Healthcare, and a panel discussion led by Mary Reeves, RHIA, IG Consultant, AHIMA. Panelists include Sue M. Gray, RHIA, Corporate Compliance, Smith & Hammaker; Walter Mann, CFE, CIPP, Vice President, Corporate Privacy, Community Health Systems; and John H. Dickey, MSHI, RHIA, Director, Clinical Informatics, HCA. This will be a great session!

ONC Reports National Trends Regarding Individuals’ Privacy and Security Concerns

Patient trust in the privacy and security of health information is considered foundational to the development of an interoperable health IT infrastructure. Using nationally representative survey data, ONC data brief no. 33 describes national trends in individuals’ concerns regarding the privacy and security of their medical records and unauthorized viewing of their medical records when sent electronically or by fax. The findings show individuals’ concerns declined between 2013 and 2014, but individuals continued to withhold information from health care providers due to those concerns at the same rate. Individuals’ levels of concerns and withholding did not differ by whether individuals had paper versus electronic medical records.

OCR Adds New Health App Use Scenarios to Developer Portal

OCR posted new guidance on the mHealth Developer Portal [] to provide scenarios where the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations might apply to mobile health applications. 

CMS and health insurers unveil first set of standardized quality measures

As reported by Modern Healthcare

The CMS and America's Health Insurance Plans, health plans' trade group, announced a new agreement to standardize measures of quality for the nation's doctors. Officials say the standardized measures are necessary as payers and consumers seek to shop for high-quality care.
