A Message from the CPHIMA President, Laura Rizzo, MHA, RHIA
I noted in my first message in August 2010 that the end of summer always makes me contemplate the passage of time, now I'm contemplating where the time went this year!   

It has been a busy year for CPHIMA.  Although we did not achieve 100% of the objectives established in the 2010-2011 Strategic Plan, I am pleased to report on the many things that were accomplished:
1.     Manage CPHIMA finances in accordance with the 2010-2011 budget.
  • As of March 31, 2011, income was less than expected, but expenses were also less than expected allowing for a budget variance of < $100.
2      Develop a member-recruitment incentive program.
  • At the December meeting, all new members names were included in a drawing for a prize and a winner selected
3.     Enhance the use of KnowledgeConnex by evaluating capabilities of Base Camp for management of CPHIMA Board activities.  Develop implementation plan if Base Camp is selected for this purpose.
  • The Executive Board began using BaseCamp for management of CPHIMA activities, including organization and storage of documents.
  • This initiative will continue in 2011-2012
4.     Utilize list of vendors from 2010 PHIMA Annual Meeting to recruit new vendor sponsors for educational sessions and/or presenters for educational sessions. 
  • Kiwi Tek was a new vendor that sponsored $250 for the March meeting.
5.     Invite at least one new active member and one student member to participate on each committee to encourage more membership participation.
  • Not done—consider for 2011-2012
1.     Participate in PHIMA Regional President’s Conference Calls to share and coordinate goals and plans of regional associations with PHIMA.
  • President, Laura Rizzo participated
2.     Attend PHIMA Executive Board Meetings (President and/or President Elect).
  • President, Laura Rizzo attended
3.     Support at least one member of the CPHIMA board to attend a PA Hill Day if sponsored by PHIMA.
  • President, Laura Rizzo participated in the inaugural PA Hill Day on May 11
4.     Coordinate or participate in at least one career awareness event (such as Pathways to Gold Collar Careers in Lancaster).
  • CPHIMA was represented at Gold Career Days in Lancaster on November 16 and December 1, 2010
5.     Provide financial or other support to AHIMA-certified HIT/HIM programs in the CPHIMA region in accordance with established budget.
  • CPHIMA sent $200 to Penn College of Technology and  $200 to South Hills Business School
6.     Review, update, and promote the established CPHIMA student mentoring program.
  • Completed by Nathan McWilliams.  Information is posted on the CPHIMA website.

1.     Actively encourage CPHIMA members to participate in PHIMA-sponsored electronic learning options.
  • Information about PHIMA-sponsored education was sent to the CPHIMA list serve
2.     Evaluate the possible of co-sponsoring at least one webinar with PHIMA.
  • Not done—consider for 2011-2012
3.     Provide three coding roundtable meetings.
  • Not done—consider for 2011-2012
4.     Provide four educational sessions.
  • Four educational programs were provided.  Each of the first three had 80+ in attendance
1.     Expand alliances and collaborative efforts with related Central Pennsylvania professional groups that support our strategic mission, vision, and values.
  • Sponsored member survey on behalf of Grace LaConte, AHDI/CPHIMA member, for her Master’s thesis
2.     Evaluate replacing the CPHIMA News Network (CNN) with an e-Alert
  • CNN format was changed to a monthly e-Alert
  • e-Alerts were sent out each month by Jennifer Zimmerman, Public Relations Chair
3.     Provide at least quarterly updates to PHIMA’s e-Alert.
  • Jennifer Zimmerman submitted CPHIMA updates to PHIMA
4.     Work with KnowledgeConnex to update and enhance website as needed.
  • Jennifer Shorts, Website Chair reviewed the website and worked with the Webmaster to have it updated.  Lauren Houseal, Secretary assisted in providing documents
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as CPHIMA President.   I am proud to be part of an organization that represents some of the finest qualities of the HIM profession.
