If You Haven’t Registered for the MSHIMA Annual Conference – Time is Running Out!


A great agenda, fun activities, and interactive sessions are just a few reasons to attend the 2016 annual conference at the Jackson Marriott. The conference will be held from June 21-24, 2016, so you only have a couple of weeks left to register. Up to 18.5 CE hours are available. Visit the conference website in order to register, view the agenda, register for a hotel room, or learn more about conference vendors and sponsors.

Contribute to the MSHIMA Silent Auction


To help raise money for health information management scholarships for deserving students, MSHIMA hosts a silent auction at the conference each year.  If you have an item to donate to the silent auction, please contact Kristy Artmann at kartmann@smcc.edu.

Moving Behavioral Health Reimbursement Toward Parity


This payment specialist says reimbursement reform has been slow, but signs point to change starting to come more quickly.  Reimbursement for behavioral healthcare in the United States has been moving from a fee-based to value-based system in a slower, more fragmented manner, with nearly half the states taking action to bring it more in line with primary care, while nearly one-fourth of the states are waiting and watching.  In Mississippi, behavioral health access and reimbursement both fail to meet demand.

2016 PQRS GPRO Registration Open through June 30, 2016


Groups of two or more Eligible Professionals (EPs) can avoid the -2.0% CY 2018 Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS) payment adjustment by meeting the satisfactory reporting criteria through the 2016 PQRS Group Reporting Option (GPRO). The Physician Value - PQRS (PV-PQRS) Registration System is now open through June 30 for groups to select a GPRO reporting mechanism.

Medicare’s “Big Data” Tools Fight and Prevent Fraud to Yield Over $1.5 Billion in Savings


Over the past five years, CMS has successfully implemented a Fraud Prevention System (FPS) using “big data” and predictive analytics approaches to fight fraud, waste and abuse in the Medicare Fee-For-Service program. This effort has had a profound impact on fraudulent providers and illegitimate payments by allowing us to quickly identify issues and take action.  Since the beginning of the program, over $1.5 billion in inappropriate payments have been identified by the system through new leads or contributions to existing investigations. CMS is now working to develop next-generation predictive analytics with a new system design that even further improves the usability and efficiency of the FPS.

OCR: Patients can be charged more than $6.50 for copies of e-records


Earlier this year, the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Civil Rights stipulated that organizations covered by HIPAA can charge patients for copies of electronic records only within certain parameters, such as covering the cost of printing and mailing copies. The OCR recommended $6.50. But last week, the ONC said that was just a suggestion. They are permitted to calculate the actual cost of electronic copies of records and charge more than the suggested rate.
