Issue 37 - April 2013

Inside this Issue:

President's Message

Spring is a very busy and exciting time of year for our association.  We kicked off March with a successful Quarterly Business Meeting (QBM), followed by the AHIMA Leadership Symposium in Washington DC, and Capitol Hill day.  Maryland had a good number of students and association members present on Capitol Hill, and many of us met with Congressmen or their representatives to discuss current issues in Healthcare. This was a good way to raise our voices, and educate others about the Health Information Management profession.

The Executive Board continues to work on our strategic plan, and will roll this out during our Business meeting at the annual convention. I want to thank everyone who volunteered to assist, as well as everyone who took time to answer the recent survey. This information will be utilized as we develop our short and long-term plan. AHIMA also continues to fine tune its strategic planning, and has engaged the Studer Group to provide guidance. Key strategies of quality, service, people, finance, and growth, have been identified, will provide direction, and lay the foundation for future initiatives. Having worked in an organization who utilizes Studer principles, I can attest that this model truly helps drive results. It will be exciting to watch this take shape over the next few years.

Lastly, I want to urge everyone to cast your vote for the various board positions up for election.  An email blast was sent a few weeks ago to all Association members, so if you haven’t already done so, please take a few minutes to read the biographies of our excellent candidates.  I wish all of the candidates luck and want to thank them for running.  I look forward to seeing everyone at our annual convention in June!

Kristen M. Denney, MA, RHIA
President, MdHIMA

Hill Day Wrap-up
from March 28, 2013

The MdHIMA Delegates attended the Leadership Symposium held on 3/18/13 in Washington DC. The meeting kicked off with presentations on Congressional Advocacy through use of Social Media such as Twitter. The attendees then proceeded to gain additional education on how AHIMA and our own Component State Associations (CSAs) can use social media for purposes of communication within our state.    AHIMA Leaderhip then proceeded to provide an overview on the ongoing Strategic Planning sessions, followed by an overview of the topics of discussion for Capitol Hill Day.

Various members and students from MdHIMA descended upon Capitol Hill on 3/19/13 to meet with our Congressmen. Topics of discussion centered around Recovery Audit Contractors (RACs) and urging our congressmen to become a Cosponsor of HR 1250 the Medicare Audit Improvement Act of 2013, and updating HIPAA legislation regarding unique patient identifiers. All in all, it was well attended and we hope to continue with our advocacy efforts at both the state and national level.
