CMS: No further delays in ICD-10-CM/PCS implementation

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will maintain their commitment to the current ICD-10-CM/PCS compliance date of October 1, 2014, according to a letter sent to AHIMA President Kathleen A. Frawley, JD, MS, RHIA, FAHIMA. The letter was sent in response to AHIMA’s call for CMS to stand firm on its ICD-10 implementation date after more than 80 physician groups represented by the American Medical Association called on CMS in January to delay or abandon the ICD-10 conversion. CMS’ Acting Administrator Marilyn Tavenner formally declined the request in a letter sent February 6, stating a halt of implementation “would be costly, burdensome, and would eliminate the impending benefits” of ICD-10, according to an American Academy of Family Physicians blog post. CSA ICD-10 Advocacy Initiative

The CSA ICD-10 Advocacy Team will be your lead group with the ICD-10 Advocacy Initiative. The role of this team is to be the primary guiding body for the ICD-10 advocacy efforts in the state. Specifically this group will:

  • Identify and recruit individuals to be engaged with ICD-10 advocacy effort. It will be important to identify individuals who can give ICD-10 presentations and who can provide outreach recommendations
  • Determine the outreach plan for the CSA and identify individuals, offices and organizations where presentations and information can be provided
  • In conjunction with individual members of the CSA, initiate outreach efforts to individuals, offices and organizations to determine their need for ICD-10 education and their specific level of information that they need to be provided
  • Maintain information on the progress of the initiative, evaluations on the presentations, the number of presentations, and any feedback on the program.  Report this information to AHIMA.

AHIMA is aiming for the CSA ICD-10 Advocacy Teams to be determined and active by the end of the 1st quarter of 2013.  For this to occur, some immediate steps need to be initiated:

  1. Designate a lead for the CSA ICD-10 Advocacy Team
  2. Establish a team (committee): It would be helpful to recruit individuals who are already engaged in the CSA and throughout the state. This can include BOD members, regional representatives, approved trainers
  3. Identify other interested individuals: ICD-10 experts, movers/shakers, allies in other organizations
  4. Develop a communication and outreach plan
