NYSAN News & Policy Updates

State Budget Update

Thank you to everyone who participated in our advocacy efforts this year by calling and visiting legislators, organizing superintendent and school leader letters to the legislature, and getting parents to write letters to the editor about afterschool. This work is critical to furthering the afterschool field, and your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, the final outcome of state budget this year was very disappointing. Despite Governor Andrew Cuomo’s proposal for $160 million in new afterschool funding for 2015-16, there was no new statewide afterschool funding in the final budget. All existing afterschool funding streams – Advantage After School, Extended School Day/School Violence Prevention, and Youth Development Program – were funded at the same level that they were last year. New York City received an increase in their school funding that it appears from press statements that Mayor Bill de Blasio is planning on using for afterschool programs. While the budget is out, the fight is far from over. It is time to look ahead for next year and start raising awareness about the importance of afterschool programs. Federal Budget Update

NYSAN would like to thank Representatives Yvette Clark, Joe Crowley, Eliot Engel, Sean Patrick Maloney, Grace Meng, Jerry Nadler, Bill Owens, Charles Rangel, Tom Reed, Louise Slaughter, and Paul Tonko and Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer for taking action to support 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) funding in the federal budget.  New York has more of its delegation supporting 21st CCLC than any other state, and we are proud to be represented by so many supporters of afterschool programming!

Journal of Expanded Learning Opportunities (JELO)

The Central Valley Afterschool Foundation has started a new peer-reviewed publication that brings together research-based and practitioner-based articles around expanded learning opportunities. The inaugural issue of the Journal of Expanded Learning Opportunities (JELO) is now available on their website. Although focused on California, the journal still makes national connections and this edition includes an interview with New York University researcher Pedro Noguera.

The place where trainers, employers and people who work with kids connect online to share job, training and career opportunities in New York State.

Tip for Success

We know that high-quality afterschool programs create positive outcomes for youth, but students must regularly attend the program to see these gains. Aside from offering engaging programming that keeps youth coming back, programs can do their part to ensure that youth attend regularly by setting clear attendance expectations. Tell participants what the attendance expectations are in the beginning of the year and ask for their feedback. Publish expectations in the parent handbook and reiterate these expectations during parent meetings. If your program has a display board with program materials, include your attendance policy. Finally, if participants aren't coming regularly, ensure that a staff member follows up with the participants and family to find out why they aren't attending.

Research shows that only high-quality afterschool programs create positive outcomes for participants. Access NYSAN’s Quality Self-Assessment (QSA) tool to begin improving the quality of your program.

National Summer Learning Association Resources

As we approach summer, it is a good time to review resources from the National Summer Learning Association (NSLA) for your summer programs. Take a look back at Summer Starts in September: Comprehensive Planning Guide for Summer Learning Programs, which includes research based strategies, program examples, and tools for summer program staff, leaders, and trainers to a develop high-quality, high-impact program. Remember that pairing teachers with local summer learning programs can be a strategy to impact school-year outcomes and read more in Innovative Pathways to Teaching Reform: Using Connected Learning to Develop Tomorrow’s Leaders. If you need research to show that summer programs are important, you can share Summer Learning Can Help Close The Achievement Gap. Finally, Moving Summer Learning Forward: A Strategic Roadmap for Funding in Tough Times shares creative strategies to combine funding streams and helps to identify the most promising funding streams to finance and sustain funding for summer learning programs.

STEM Integration in K-12 Education

STEM Integration in K-12 Education: Status, Prospects, and an Agenda for Research is a report developed under the leadership of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and the Board on Science Education of the National Research Council (NRC) with the support of many professionals and experts in the science field across the country. This group researched approaches and conditions most likely to lead to positive outcomes of integrated STEM education in a variety of in school and afterschool program settings. A key finding of the research is that staff should not assume that youth are making the connections between subjects the adult sees, but that these connections, either to other parts of the same activities or to other disciplines, must be made explicitly to successfully support student learning. The Science of Character

Let It Ripple has produced “The Science of Character” video identifying the importance and impact of character on our lives. This can be a great video to share with program staff focusing around how the program helps encourage and shape character, and can also be shared with participants for discussion about their character traits. Highlighting how our character virtues lead to a meaningful life, the video focuses on how to develop, shape, and make our own character virtues stronger while encouraging the strengthening of others’ character virtues. Afterschool Arts Project Supports Teens

RiverzEdge Art Project is a social enterprise program that takes place afterschool in Woonsocket, RI. The program takes underserved teens from the local community and teaches them work readiness skills through hands-on experience doing work for clients in graphic design, digital photography, screen-printing, and visual arts. The teens are paid a stipend for their work and can remain in the program as long as they keep their grades up, stay on track to graduate, and apply to college. A recent Wallace Foundation report, Something to Say: Success Principles for Afterschool Arts Programs from Urban Youth and Other Experts, used RiverzEdge as one of their case studies for the report. Funding Opportunities and Competitions

Wish You Well Foundation

The Wish You Well Foundation is accepting grant proposals for projects promoting the development or the expansion of literacy and educational programs for families. Applicants must be 501c3 organizations. The maximum grant is $10,000 and proposals are reviewed quarterly. Learn more here.

American Honda Foundation

The American Honda Foundation supports youth education with a specific focus on STEM, the environment, job trainings, and literacy. Qualifying nonprofit organizations and schools are encouraged to apply online  for an opportunity to win up to $75,000, limit one application per organization per year. Application deadline is May 1, 2014.


ING Run for Something Better

ING Run for Something Better, in partnership with the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD), awards up to 60 grants of $3,500 to elementary and middle schools who wish to start a school-based running program or to expand an existing one. The schools can chose to implement the program before, during, or after school but must ensure students of all abilities and genders are involved and that the program operates at least 2 days week. The application deadline is May 15, 2014, click here to apply!

Liberty Mutual Insurance Responsible Sports

Liberty Mutual Insurance’s Community Grant program rewards youth sports teams, clubs, and school sports programs with $2,500 when they bring their supporters and communities together to adopt a Responsible Sports environment.  Sports administrators register their organization for this interactive experience and then get the support of parents, coaches, volunteers, and community members in reading the Responsible Sports guides and taking a quiz to confirm their learning. Each passed quiz equals one point which is then credited to the sports organization, at the end of the grant period the organizations with the most points earn the $2,500 grant. World We Want Foundation

The World We Want Foundation is accepting applications for grants used towards Social Action Projects in an effort to support youth who are looking to make a positive impact on their community and the world as a whole.  The organization encourages Youth Global Citizens to take action in their community to design projects with social importance while building valuable knowledge in the 21st century. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, for information visit the World We Want Foundation website.
