POLICIES AND PROGRAMS

Nigeria revises National Policy on Food and Nutrition to include severe acute malnutrition. For the first time, severe acute malnutrition will be recognized in Nigeria’s food and nutrition policy with a target of halving the number of children suffering from SAM by 2025.

Global Agri-business Alliance launched to contribute to UN Sustainable Development Goals. Thirty-six agribusiness companies have formed a private sector initiative to scale impact and drive change toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals with an emphasis on SDG 2.
 

Rwanda: First country to sign climate change regional framework. Rwanda is leading the way on a framework that establishes the Climate Application and Prediction Center for Central Africa, which will collect, forecast, and communicate data on weather and climatic conditions. 
 

Right Start program launched in Senegal to improve nutrition of women and girlsThe Micronutrient Initiative and Government of Canada have launched a new program in Senegal to accelerate progress towards better nutrition for girls and women, part of the global Right Start initiative aimed at improving the nutrition of 100 million women and girls around the world by 2020.
RESEARCH AND INNOVATION

Ending Hunger in Africa: The Elimination of Hunger and Food Insecurity on the African Continent by 2025 – Conditions for Success. According to this report by NEPAD and the Pardee Center for International Futures, Africa is not on track to meet its target of eliminating hunger and food insecurity by 2025 but it is possible to change this trajectory by taking aggressive action on both supply and demand sides of food access and availability.
 

Africa Agriculture Status Report 2016. The report by the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) documents trends in African agricultural transformation and includes a chapter focused on the progress made to reduce malnutrition and hunger across the continent.
 

Leveraging social protection programs for improved nutrition: Summary of evidence. A World Bank paper finds that social protection transfers tend to increase household budget devoted to food--often more than other income sources--and highlights evidence that transfers can change diet composition and quality.
 

The Taste of Change. NCDFREE and the Nutritional Health Alliance in Mexico have released a short film documenting efforts to combat obesity in Mexico including the government’s implementation of a tax on sugary beverages.
NEWS AND EVENTS
 

Godan launches petition and summit for open data. The 300+ partners of the Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition (Godan) initiative are calling on organizations to open their data on agricultural research through a two-day summit, the largest event of its kind.
 

Malawi: US announces $47 million food assistance to Malawi. The package is in response to the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee’s report that 6.5 million Malawians are food-insecure. Half of the package will be in the form of food aid and the other half is earmarked for agricultural recovery and nutrition activities.


FAO calls on governments to act on malnutrition in all its forms. Speaking at the UN General Assembly, FAO Director General José Graziano da Silva reminded governments of their commitments made at the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2) in 2014, and called on them to transform those commitments into action through national policies and programmes.
