Which Edtech Companies Are Producing the Best Research-Based Products?

Mary Jo Madda - EdSurge

“Edtech companies have a responsibility when putting out studies to understand data clearly and present it accurately.”

This is the sentiment that launched Digital Promise’s report on the top research-based products in edtech. Check out the top 3 here:

Learning Sciences: BrainQuake Inc - The company behind Wuzzit Trouble, a math game for students in middle school.

User Research: Cogent Education - The producer of interactive science case studies, which put students in the shoes of professional scientists.

Evaluation Research: Woot Math - A math supplement that teaches number sense and conceptual understanding of fractions and decimals.

[Hilarious] PhD's of Reddit. What Is a Dumbed Down Summary of Your Thesis?

Reddit - Reddit

Some favourites:

 - This protein looks like it might contribute to asthma. Oh, turns out it probably doesn't.
 - Sand washes away, don't build important stuff on it.
- Inpatients with schizophrenia are happier and socialize more in the context of a music listening group. It was obvious before we began the project and we learned nothing.
- Museums digitized their collections wrong, can we use computers to fix it? Sort of.
- Children learn by being a particular kind of dumb, and if you want a computer to learn from adults as fast as children do, you need to program it to start by being dumb in that way.

Transforming The EdTech Ecosystem: A Checklist For Investing

Barbara Kurshan - Forbes

At a time when edtech investment is down, entrepreneurs are developing apps that merely address periphery problems that are not at the core of teaching and learning.

Developers and investors need to focus on:

1. Addressing the complete needs of the child.
2. Stress testing their product by completing a thorough investigation of their solution's theoretical model.
3. The need to transform the ecosystem instead of using technology to do what is already being done without technology.

Learning In The Age Of Digital Distraction

Eric Westervelt - NPR

We've shifted our "food foraging" mechanisms into "information foraging" ones. Information, however, moves at a much more rapid clip. As a result, we've seen a rise in multi-tasking and the inability to filter out irrelevant information. This has a significant negative impact on education and learning.

The answer is not to completely ban technology, because that's here to stay. Instead, consider how to teach children how and why to sustain attention on one goal, incorporate meditation and exercise into video games, and create technology-free time periods that allow sustained face-to-face engagement.

Top 10 Education Technologies that Will Be Dead and Gone in the Next Decade

Dian Schaffhauser, Rhea Kelly - Campus Technology

A nationwide survey lists the top ten education technologies teachers think will disappear in ten years. The top technologies that educators predicted would become big were augmented reality and 3D printing.

1. Desktop Computers and Laptops
2. Clickers
3. Non-interactive Projectors
4. Overhead Projectors
5. Traditional Presentation Software
6. Interactive Whiteboards
7. CDs and DVDs
8. Anything Printed
9. Current Learning Management Systems
10. Computer Labs and Dedicated Workstations

Education Must Adapt to AI-induced Changes

Guillaume Renouard - L’atelier

The impact of AI on the labour market is going to require profound changes in our education system. How can the education sector adapt to them?

The most important skill will be learning to learn. People should be trained to be multi-skilled, adaptable and able to rapidly assimilate a range of complex skills.

The education system will need to accompany people throughout their entire lives. Formal ‘education’ and ‘vocational skills training’ will become more interwoven in the future.

The education system could strengthen their links with companies with the role of transmitting the required knowledge and skills and boosting lifelong learning.
