Visa Finds Counterfeit Fraud Is Down 52 Percent Since First Full Year Of Chip Cards


Visa announced that counterfeit fraud dropped 52% the first year after the EMV chip was rolled out in the US for companies who had chip-enabled terminals. For all in-store payments, counterfeit fraud has dropped 14%.

Chris Skinner's Blog

Chris Skinner writes a persuasive blog post of how blockchain can be used to combat money laundering. He states the technology would enable each transaction to be mapped and vetted through the ledger system made popular by bitcoin. This would mitigate 98% of money laundering that remains unchecked.

Alibaba's Ant Financial buys MoneyGram for $880m


Acquisition 1: Ant Financial buys MoneyGram. The move still needs regulatory approval from the US Committee on Foreign Investment.

Airbnb is in Talks to Acquire Social Payments Startup Tilt


Acquisition 2: Airbnb wants to buy Tilt. Tilt is a payments company focused on social events like booking trips and parties. This fits nicely as Airbnb expands its competencies from lodging to the whole travel experience.

A FinTech Startup Tries to Shake up American Student Loans

The Economist

Climb is a startup in New York City that seeks to provide small loans to students based on the rate of return calculated as the uplift in earnings after the course of study. The cost of the loan is subtracted from the earnings calculation. Average loans are $10K and are usually for a year duration.
