Good Evening from {chinatown}runners’ HQ

Many of you have been asking for it and I’m delighted to finally have a route map ready to share in addition to news and updates on future runs, so without further adieu, let’s dive in.

  • Start house details
For all runners participating in the 8km distance, we’ll start from Brooklyn Running Co @ 480 Bergen St. We’ll meet at 9AM with takeoff around 9:38AM. Note that Brooklyn Running Co. has generously offered bag drop, but since this is a point-to-point run, I encourage you to come ready to rock n’ roll. For all runners, please come masked.

  • Directions:
8km runners will launch from the storefront down Flatbush Av until we hit Grand Army Plaza, where we’ll then follow Prospect Park West all the way down until we hit Bartel Pritchard Square. 5km runners, we’ll scoop you up from here around 10AM and continue south until we hit 20th st, where we’ll make a right and then cruise down 5th Av to 41st st (the border of Sunset Park). We’ll hang a left and bounce up a progressive hill until we reach 7th Av where we’ll take a right and from there, cruise down til 60th Av where we’ll end and walk over to 8th Av.

  • Why 7th Av and not 8th Av?
After some recon I have decided to prioritize the safety of our runners and thus 7th Av will provide more space for socially-distanced running as well as the ability to respect the residents of Sunset Park. We’ll still end at 60th St and 8th Av where there’s a plethora of markets, bakeries, and cafes for post-run snack action.

  • Safety and other precautions
Since this is a city run, we’ll be running in the street at times in order to maintain social distancing. If you are not comfortable running through traffic and weaving around cars/pedestrians, please note that it will likely be unavoidable (we are running through a bustling Chinatown neighborhood so stay alert!).

  • How can we run with you if we’re outside of NY?
The idea for {chinatown}runners is to be a decentralized community. If you have a Chinatown or other AAPI-centric neighborhood in your city, I encourage you to run it in solidarity. There’s 2 ways to engage if you can’t turn up with us: Run with your crew, or run solo and use our hashtag #chinatownrunners. Start the same time as us (9:38AM on March 13) or run anytime the weekend of March 13-14th.

  • What’s the ultimate goal of this?
To support our Chinatowns and other AAPI neighborhoods and be the eyes and ears for the communities that have been suffering. If you’re in a position to do so, please also consider donating to this month’s charity partner, Asian Americans For Equality.

Some of you might have seen some red envelopes floating around social media—if you RSVP you’ll have the best chance to snag one, but if not, grab one at the next run, which will tentatively be planned for April 8th (TBD) in Manhattan. I’m also working on our first run of merchandise, with 100% of the profits going directly back to our Chinatowns, so stay tuned!

If you want to get involved, fill out the volunteer form on the website.

Thank you again for all of the support and enthusiasm you’ve shown so far, I’m pumped to get some miles and smiles in with all of you next week!
