Friends:

We previously shared with you information about efforts by the Board of Managers to ensure Haverford’s long-term strength and financial well-being.  We’d like to thank everyone who took the time to engage the issues we presented and those of you who shared with us thoughtful reflections and queries.

Having considered the planning work and careful analysis undertaken by many members of the Haverford community over the course of the year, the Board has directed President Kim Benston and his campus colleagues to begin implementation of a blended approach that seeks to ensure the institution’s long-term health by achieving sustainable financial equilibrium.  As detailed on this webpage, such a blended approach will require disciplined management of operating expenses, the consideration of modest enrollment growth, and management of the rate of growth of financial aid.  The extent to which the College is likely to become more need-aware in its approach to admission weighed heavily on both the community and the Board.  Ultimately, shared values were our guide, and in reaching its decision, the Board affirmed the College’s commitment to meeting the full demonstrated need of all admitted students.

Community values will continue to guide the implementation of these practices, a process that will be managed through the College’s extant governance structures, on campus and with the Board of Managers.  We make this decision while Haverford enjoys a position of enviable strength, and with it we are confident that we will be able to preserve for future generations the excellence and character of this college that we love.

Sincerely,

Garry W. Jenkins, Vice Chair
A. Richard White III, Chair
