Fairtrade Fortnight 2015

The Scottish Fair Trade Forum has been arranging visits from some Fair Trade producers which we spoke about in our last newsletter that went out in January. Click here to read about Pamela, a Fair Trade producer from Mauritius, that we are taking to a number of events to speak about the impact Fair Trade has on her life. Also keep an eye on the news section of our website, as well as our Facebook and Twitter feeds, as we will be keeping everyone up-to-date with how the producer tours are going.

We have organised events with Fair Trade groups all over Scotland to allow more people to meet, and hear from, the visiting producers. The producers will be speaking at schools and community events, as well as at the Scottish Parliament to inspire people with their personal stories about the positive impact of Fair Trade.

One of these events is a schools conference at Glasgow City Chambers. Pamela, the Fair Trade producer from Mauritius, will be there to speak to Primary and Secondary school children about the difference Fair Trade has made to her and her community. Additionally, some of the schools attending will share their experiences with Fair Trade education and the work they have done to support it. Pamela will also be visiting schools in Angus, Linlithgow, and several other locations.

One of our other visitors is Charles, the Trust Manager for Kasinthula Cane Growers cooperative  in Malawi. He will be attending numerous school and community events throughout the country from the Scottish Borders to Orkney!

Pamela and Charles will also attend a reception at the Scottish Parliament. We hope that this gives them an opportunity to share their experiences with political figures and encourage our nation's leaders to continue to work for a fairer world.
#FairForWomen Twitter Campaign
#FairForWomen logo
We're working with  YWCA Scotland - The Young Women's Movement to coordinate a #FairForWomen‬ twitter chat on the 6th March to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight and International Women's Day.

There are lots of organisations taking part, and it wil hopefully raise awareness and discussion of how Fair Trade helps women and the key role women have for sustainable development. We'd love you all to take part on the day - so keep an eye out for the #FairForWomen hashtag!

If you're part of an organisation or a retailer and would like to take part please contact sophie.tolley@sftf.org.uk for more information.

A Motion from the Scottish Parliament
The Scottish Parliament logo

The Scottish Parliament has highlighted that 2015 marks the second anniversary of Scotland achieving Fair Trade Nation status and that this should be celebrated during the fortnight.
Congratulations to everyone who has expressed their commitment to Fair Trade and who will be holding events across the country. Thank you as well to everyone who supports the work of the Scottish Fair Trade Forum  promoting a widening of awareness of trade justice in Scotland and hosting fair trade visitors to Scotland from the Dominican Republic, Malawi and Mauritius and of course,  for buying fairly-traded goods!

The Parliamentary Reception will celebrate the achievements of Fair Trade businesses and organisations across Scotland and encourage public bodies and private business to procure fairly-traded products to build on our Fair Trade Nation status.
Nurseries Gear Up for Fairtrade Fortnight
Fair Trade Nurseries logo
This Fairtrade Fortnight marks the launch of the official roll out of Fair Trade Nurseries across Scotland. East Dunbartonshire have so far led the way after a successful pilot scheme in 2012/13 and now nurseries from all local authorities are encouraged to become FairAware - the first stage in the Fairtrade Schools Award.
The Forum has been busy preparing so that nurseries have everything they need to get involved in Fair Trade - we have launched a mailing list, a Facebook group, and developed lots of resources available on our website.
We will also be hosting an information and CPD event in Glasgow on the 4th March. This is an opportunity for nurseries to find out more about the Fairtrade Schools Award; how Fair Trade sits within the Curriculum for Excellence for Early Years; and attend a workshop run by the West of Scotland Development Education Centre.
