Interntn'l Adoptees in Citizenship Limbo

New York's Gillibrand Signs on to Potential Solution

"Thousands of international adoptees do not have U.S. citizenship, though American agencies approved their entry, bringing these children here to become legal members of their families and full-fledged Americans.  Some adoptees have been deported from . . . a country they do not remember and whose language and culture are unknown to these American-raised persons," says Mirah Riben recently in the Huffington Post.  This effects those adopted prior to 2001.  Before this, adoptees did not automatically become citizens when they were adopted by Americans.  New York's Senator Kristen Gillibrand is one of the co-signers of the Adoptee Citizenship Act of 2015, a bill the seeks to change this.

THANKS TO SUSIE
Late last month, Susan Collins, who most recently served as our Conference and Information Coodinator, left the Coalition. This came out of a need to bring the Coalition's core staff together in one location. Susie, as she is known to many, will be missed.  She contributed much to the Coalition's work and presence in the state. Susie continues in her work in the child welfare field, serving as the President of the Task Force on Children and Families of Chemung County, where she lives.
