January Speaks

Chair's Message

Fellow GLASers,

I hope the New Year is treating you well so far.  We ended our 2013 on a very special note with our December Holiday Party and we’re kicking off 2014 by making our January meeting a special Joint ASNT-AWS meeting. We expect at least 30 members from the American Welding Society’s (AWS) local Los Angeles-Inland Empire Section (LA-IE) to join us at Maggie’s Pub.

At 6pm, you can enjoy our usual Social Hour in the lounge, or if you would like to attend a talk during that hour, Paul May of Orange Coast Testing will speak in one of the banquet rooms about "Qualification and Certification of Liquid Penetrant and Magnetic Particle Inspection Personnel." As usual, dinner will take place during the 7 o’clock hour, followed by an 8pm talk. George Rolla of Advanced Weldtec, who is the AWS LA-IE Section Certification Chair, will lead a panel presentation with other CWIs about "Qualification and Certification to be a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)."

I want to take this opportunity to thank all those who made our ASNT-GLAS Holiday Party live up to the name I gave it this year, "The Magic of the Season: Goodwill to All." It was truly a magical evening for the almost 100 of us who made the sleigh ride over to the Embassy Suites in Downey. First and foremost, a huge thank you to a jolly good fellow, Section Vice-Chair Duane Schultz, and his wife Teri for all the hours they put in as the chief organizers of the event. (We’re also grateful to daughter Rachel Schultz for all her help at the event!) Very warm thanks also go to Cheryl Dufur of Test Equipment Distributors (TED) for playing the role of a real-life Mrs. Claus in generously donating and delivering wrapped presents for each and every one of our GLAS youngsters in attendance. Graciously dressing up as Santa and Mrs. Claus for pictures with the kids and the kids-in-all-of-us was longtime GLAS member and longtime evening instructor in our night classes at Bosco, Bob Clifton, and his sister-in-law, Helen. Very special thanks to each of our Party’s Sponsors for growing some money on their Christmas trees and sharing it with us to help pay the final tab: Sherwin, Test Equipment Distributors (TED), Universal NDT, Votaw Precision Technologies, Willick Engineering, Ted Peet of Smith Emery and DWS Consulting (Duane W. Schultz). Finally, I want to thank and recognize magician Lauro Castillo for his fun and expert showmanship both before dinner with all the table tricks and after dinner with the floor show. He very much deserved the standing ovation we gave him at the end of the night, and I especially appreciated his kindness to all the kids. The absolute wonder and awe I saw on the faces of all the children gathered around him during the show made the evening worth every penny to me. Last but not least, I also want to thank each and every one of you who attended and brought presents for the Marine Corps’ renowned Toys for Tots program (which our Marine guests informed us was founded right here in Los Angeles after World World II, so another reason for us to be proud to be Angelenos). Thank you for spreading our ASNT magic and goodwill to less-fortunate children.

Let us continue the good cheer, goodwill and magic in the year ahead.

Sincerely,

Paul Cole Padilla
