March Speaks

Chair's Message
Fellow GLASers,

Well, spring has sprung! I know, I know: the first official day of spring isn't until the vernal equinox March 20, but it sure feels like an early spring to me, what with my thrown-off circadian rhythm thanks to the changeover to daylight savings time and my chapped lips thanks to this hot, dry air. (Fingers crossed for my sinuses with allergy season.) But along with the minor (or not-so-minor) inconveniences, of course spring brings more than its share of bouquets full of benefits, among them this year: a very special season for our Greater Los Angeles Section of ASNT.

Our ASNT-GLAS Spring officially commenced with the start of the spring semester of classes at Bosco, with over 130 GLAS enrollees so far. Several classes began last week, but it's not too late to enroll in most of those classes, nor in some other classes which begin this week. You can access the schedule of classes here via the ASNT-GLAS website or here via the Don Bosco website.

And our first Maggie's Pub meeting of the spring is already upon us, for this Tuesday, March 11, is already the second Tuesday of the month! Here during Women's History Month, we are very proud to host as our featured speaker, Marybeth Miceli, who made history a few years ago as the first woman from our Greater Los Angeles Section to serve on our national ASNT Board of Directors. Currently Chair of our national ASNT Infrastructure Committee, Marybeth made ASNT history yet again recently by becoming the youngest person ever to receive the high honor of being named an ASNT Fellow. Needless to say, we look forward to the "Emerging Technologies in Bridge Monitoring" that Marybeth will share with us. Her talk will take place during the 8 o'clock hour, following our usual Social Hour at 6 and our Dinner hour beginning at 7. And remember, in honor of Marybeth and Women's History Month, all women who come to Maggie's this month will receive their dinner free of charge as part of our ASNT-GLAS Women's Initiative to recruit, retain and promote women in NDT!

And at our second-Tuesday-of-the-month meeting at Maggie's next month, April 8, we will compliment dinner free of charge to veterans and military in attendance as part of our ASNT-GLAS Veterans and Military Inititave to recruit, retain and promote those who have volunteered on our behalf in our armed forces. While Military Appreciation Month is not until May, we will celebrate a month early in April in honor of our featured speaker, Army vet Ricky Morgan, to whom we GLASers are especially proud and grateful, not only for his service to our country but to our Section and our Society. Ricky not only has generously given tremendous time and talent to us for decades here in L.A., including serving as ASNT-GLAS Chair, but also nationally and internationally for ASNT, including serving as President and Chair of our entire Society. Last year, Ricky spent many weeks in China to ensure our safety here in America, which he will share in his talk "NDT on the 'High Roller', The World's Biggest Ferris Wheel: Made in China, Coming to Vegas in 2014."

For our meeting at Maggie's on May 13, in anticipation of our extra-special, "out-of-this-world" Year-End Banquet June 21 with the space shuttle Endeavour, we will host a talk about the grand history of Los Angeles aerospace by representatives from Downey's own good and great Aerospace Legacy Foundation, which works very hard to preserve and spread the special history and legacy of the Angeleno aerospace industry we GLASers helped build (and maintain and rebuild) to lift us above our smog-drenched skies to the wondrous stars beyond.

So our ASNT-GLAS Spring and our entire 2013-2014 year, which saw us begin by taking a ride to Mars aboard "Curiosity" with JPL and Bosco's own Tim O'Donnell and then continue our flight into space with Votaw Precision Technologies and its president Scott Wallace, will fittingly conclude with a "blast-off" into summer on the solstice itself, June 21, from the California Science Center downtown with Endeavour. So mark your calendars for that "departure" date! More details will be forthcoming as spring progresses, but we will have the Endeavour Pavilion all to ourselves for a special few hours that evening for touring, socializing, dining, raffling, and of course, honoring, including our second year of special ASNT-GLAS student honorees under our Women's, Veterans and Military Initiatives. In addition to continuing our named scholarships in honor of Marybeth Miceli and Ricky Morgan for female and veteran/military students, respectively, we are also proud to continue our named women's scholarships in honor of Kristy Davis-Jones, our first female ASNT-GLAS Chair, and Brianna Buchanan, our second female ASNT-GLAS Chair. To help fund our scholarships and to help underwrite our (extra-)Special Event, we hope we can count on Sponsors to be generous.

And speaking of our Women's, Veterans and Military Initiatives, remember all you women, veterans and military receive your ASNT-GLAS courses at Don Bosco at half-price to recruit, retain and promote you in NDT!
