LPH into 2018

It's that time of year again where we post our new calendar for the next season. For 2018, LPH has a few new, exciting changes alongside the more familiar workshops, however firstly there are just a few places left on the 2017 workshops.

Last places for 2017:
1 place on PhotoShop on 22nd October (Halfterm teachers?!)
3 places on Landscape workshop on the 12th November

2018

The first change for 2018 is a low-season price; This applies to the workshops with start dates from January 28th 2018 through to March 25th 2018. So now you can enjoy John's favourite season at even better value. A price table at the bottom of this newsletter confirms the pricing for all 2018 workshops.

Early-booking discounts will also apply for any 2018 workshops booked and the deposit paid up to close of business on Friday 26th January 2018

A summary of our new, and a reminder of our existing workshops is below:

*NEW* Short fully escorted workshops

Many of our guests belong to camera clubs, and they often say that their fellow members would like to come on a workshop, but think the full 6-days of a landscape workshop is a little too long, and would prefer a shorter workshop. In response to this, we are introducing a short, fully escorted workshop.

Running from Monday afternoon through to Friday morning, it will include four nights accommodation, and three full days in the field with John. Arriving from 3.30pm on Monday, whilst you enjoy tea and coffee in the lecture room, John wIll run the regular camera surgery / menu setup and recommendations. After dinner, a full introduction to LPH and the workshops will be followed by a photographic presentation of likely locations that can be visited within the lakes, showing subjects and techniques that can be covered over the forthcoming three days.

The next three days will be spent visiting locations within the lakes during the day. Evening sessions will follow with feedback on a selection of your photographs taken to give you more tips on exposure, composition and post-processing.

As on every LPH workshop, the days start with a full english cooked breakfast (or a trimmed down version), packed lunches are provided each day, and a delicious, home-cooked, three-course dinner (with a choice of each course) each evening.

*NEW* Creative workshop

A variation on the above fully-escorted workshop, still a four-night/three-day workshop, but tailored for those who want to get out of a rut and try something different. The creative workshop (introduced last year) can offer all types of creative techniques, both in-camera, and post-processing will be covered.

A (non-comprehensive) list of techniques might include:

  • ICM (Intentional Camera Movement), using slow shutter speeds or multi exposure techniques.

  • Multiple exposure, and really learning how to get the most out of multiple exposure from your camera (if your camera has the M/E facility), including the various in-camera blending modes, and when to use them.

  • Using single-element lenses

  • Long-Exposure techniques

  • Soft-focus, and ways to achieve it in the field, and post processing

  • Blending images together in post-processing

  • Duplicating, flipping and blending images

  • Creating “planet” pictures

  • Indoor creativity for wet days

None of the techniques used are exclusive to the creative workshop, and all can be covered on any of our regular workshops, but the creative workshop gives you a chance to really immerse yourself – with other like minded creatophiles – to stretch your creative side.

In addition to our new workshops listed above, we will continue to offer our ever popular and well established workshops:

A reminder of our other, established workshops:

Landscape workshops

6-nights, 5 days.

Sunday afternoon camera surgery

Three full-days in the field with John (usually Monday, Wednesday and Friday)

Two unaccompanied days to practice techniques

Photographic feedback on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

Thursday evening is now a well established non-catered “free evening” which gives groups the opportunity to travel further afield without the pressure of getting back in time for dinner; or simply trying out some of the many pubs / restaurants in the local area (we can make group bookings)

Limited walking

Our popular variant on the regular 6 night landscape workshop, but with less walking. That doesn't mean “no” walking, but we do our best to restrict it to around 1.5 miles per day. Just remember, paths in the lake district are seldom flat, and can be muddy too.

Active walking

Another variant on the regular landscape workshop, designed for those who want to go a bit further and possibly higher than on our “regular” weeks. Remember, a 6-mile walk with a bag full of cameras and a tripod, can feel like a 12-mile walk without carrying equipment. Sometimes it's worth travelling a bit lighter with your kit to enjoy the walk.

Black & White workshops

5-night (4 day) workshop concentrating on black and white techniques. This covers the correct exposure to get a perfect file through to post-processing techniques, examining many ways to achieve the perfect blck and white image. Two days are spent in the field photographing, and two days are set aside to cover a comprehensive range of Photoshop techniques (other plug-in software will also be covered).People booking this workshop will also receive a free copy of John's book.

Photoshop workshops

Following the successful launch of John's book “Photoshop for landscape photographers” we continue to offer our 5-night (4 day) Photoshop workshop. It will be based on the techniques covered in the book, and is designed to make Photoshop an easy to understand, logical, pleasurable experience. The workshop is based on three days Photoshop, with a day in the field – both to take pictures that can be worked on, but also to give your brains a rest! People booking this workshop will also receive a free copy of John's book.

16-20s workshop

The same format as our new short, fully escorted workshops, but aimed at 16 – 20 year olds who are interested in photography. Can be used for the DoE assessment for the residential workshop.

Both John and Deb are CRB certified.

16 – 20 year olds can of course come on our regular workshops, but the age profile on this one might be more fun. Under 16s can also attend, but would need to be accompanied by an adult.

Remember. All LPH workshops are WORKSHOPS, not COURSES. We aim to cover techniques that you all would like to learn, so please arrive with ideas about which part of your photography you would like to improve, and we'll do our very best to help you to achieve your goals.
