Welcome to the August Update from Breathing Better Living Well!
Have you ever noticed that some people seem to cope with COPD better than others?….How do some folks live at peace with COPD?….Is it even possible? In her original editorial, War or Peace: Which do you choose? Jo-Von Tucker, COPD patient and advocate, gives us a lot to think about. We'll take a look at that in our update this month, but first let's look at some other things you'll find at Breathing Better Living Well...
This month we have four articles for you - two are brand new - at Health Central.
Traveling with Oxygen
It is possible to go on vacation, even if you use supplemental oxygen. In my article COPD: Traveling with Oxygen you'll learn how.
War or Peace?
COPD is a difficult, life-changing disease. Is it even possible to be at peace with it? Take a look. Living With COPD: War or Peace?
Travel with Lung Disease
In COPD and Travel: Let's Go! you'll find tips for staying healthy and breathing well as you venture out.
Good Days, Bad Days
When the COPD patients in Respiratory Therapist Sandy Wright’s pulmonary rehab class were discouraged about having “bad air” days, Sandy put them to work…not with a new routine on a treadmill or bike, but in a much different way. Read all about it. Good Days, Bad Days and Weather.
The COPD Big Fat Reference Guide is a wealth of information for living with COPD. And it's free! Find it at the COPD Foundation website.
New at "Ask the RT"
Meet Sandy, our Wednesday "Ask the RT" and get to know a bit about her. As long as you're on the Meet the Team page, check out the cute picture of Larry's (Monday "Ask the RT") dogs. Once you meet Sandy (and Larry's dogs), stop in at our BBLW Community page and say hi!
She's a beauty!
Wow... Have you seen our newly remodeled BBLW Community? It's gorgeous! In our community you'll find our "Ask the RT" forum, expert Q & A, links to articles, discussions, and much more. But most of all, you'll find knowledgeable folks who understand and are there to help. We even have our very own Gallery where members can share photos. We'd love to meet you - see you, your pets, your kids, your garden, your travels... whatever you think we'd enjoy. Just click on Gallery at the top of the Community page and follow the prompts.
New Story - What Can I Count on Today?
This has got to be one of my all time favorites! It's a true story told to me by a dear patient about her two little girls and something that happened one summer day. The picture at the top of this newsletter reminds me of those little girls and what they might have looked like on the day they learned a very important lesson. (Scroll down to "W." Stories are in alphabetical order.)
In the BBLW Bookstore
Nonin GO2 Oximeter - durable, affordable, and keeps you on track by telling you your oxygen level.

So, my friends, enjoy these last, waning days of summer. Honoring the memory of Jo-Von Tucker, I wish for you the grace to accept the reality of your disease, the determination to seek improvement, and the wisdom to keep a healthy balance. But most of all, I wish you peace.
On a personal note... Beginning in September, I'll be taking some time off. Since I turned 13 - through junior high, high school, college, and beyond - I've been on the job, not taking any extended time off since the birth of my first child almost 27 years ago. This month it'll be 30 years that I’ve been working as a RT, and before I embark on my next 30 years, I’m going to take a bit of a break. My goal is to take about month for some time for myself - and do my best to slow down and smell the roses instead of just rushing past them. (Even if I won't be around - no worries - you can be sure that our amazing BBLW Team will be!)
That's all for now. Breathe Well today and I'll see you again next month.
