Breathing Better Living Well

Welcome to the September Update from Breathing Better Living Well!

"Just keep chipping away at it."

When I was young, that's the advice my mom gave me as I faced a big project - one that was overwhelming and seemed too big to complete.
"Just work on it a little bit every day. Tell yourself, 'I'm going to work on it for an hour or two, and when that time's up, I'm done for the day.' Then work on it some more the next day. Just chip away at it. You'll get it done."

Mom was right.

Living with COPD can be overwhelming. There's so much to learn and so little breath to hold you up as you do. But when it comes to accomplishing a goal, any goal - especially one as challenging as staying healthy and active with chronic lung disease (particularly with fall and winter on the way) - just chip away. Doing what it takes to get the job done may take weeks, months, or even years - but you can do it. We'll talk more about chipping away at big goals at the end of this newsletter, but right now let's take a look at what's going on at BBLW.

On a personal note...
I'm thrilled to report that I've finally finished writing my book, Live Your Life with COPD: 52 Weeks of Health, Happiness and Hope, and it's now in the hands of my editor. Over a period of six years I've been working on it on and off, but in earnest over the last six months. In March I gave myself the jump start I needed by going away, alone, to write, but since then I've chipped away, one word, one line, one chapter at a time...even on sunny 80-degree days. It wasn't easy - but finish it, I did.
Chipping away at the job is what gets it done. You might not be writing a book, but no doubt about it - living well with chronic lung disease takes work and determination.
Keep on taking that maintenance inhaler even when you wonder if it's doing any good. Chip away. Stick with exercise. Chip away. If you're in pulmonary  rehab keep on going, even when you don't feel like it. Chip away. Drink plenty of water every day. Chip away. And try to smile every day! A positive attitude can also help you stay as well as you possibly can be.

You may be at the beginning of your journey with chronic lung disease or perhaps you've been at this for a while. No matter what, keep on going . Keep on learning. Keep on moving. Just keep on chipping away.

I hope you enjoy the picture of "The American Horse." I took this picture last week when I treated myself to an afternoon at the Frederick Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park. This magnificent piece was originally designed by Leonardo da Vinci in the 1400's. They said it couldn't be done, but thanks to fierce determination - and a lot of chipping away on the part of a humble man with a grand vision - it's a reality.  More pictures of the horse and the gardens are now posted on the Gallery in our BBLW Community page and on BBLW Facebook

That's all for now. Breathe Well today my friends, keep chipping away, and I'll see you again next month.

Jane.

"Look at a stone cutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred-and-first blow it will split in two. It was not the last blow that did it, but all that had gone before."
~~ Jacob A. Riis
