A Message from the Dean

Happy Post-Turkey Holiday from Dunham Hall!
I hope you had a wonderful (and safe) Thanksgiving holiday break last week. While this year’s holiday weekend was not our typical break, it was still a time for us to pause and give thanks to those who matter most.
Now that we are back, the end of the fall semester is upon us. I want to remind you of some important items you should review and check off your to-do list in the coming weeks:

  • Last Day to Withdraw from Fall Semester Classes – This fall, AU has extended the deadline to drop a class with an automatic “W” to Sunday, December 6. Review your courses and, if needed, take advantage of this extended opportunity.
  • Preparing for Your Final Exams – Final exam week is scheduled to start next week (beginning Monday, December 7). While how each course uses its final exam period may vary, you should plan to meet during the final exam time block noted in WebAdvisor for each of your classes. If you are uncertain about your final exam time, please contact your instructor immediately.

The campus is open for you to study, work on a final paper, use a computer lab, access the Wi-Fi network, etc. I recommend you schedule your study time just like you would for work or your classes. By setting aside time each day to focus on your final papers, projects, and exams, you are ensuring you do not procrastinate or short-change the time and energy needed for successful completion of our courses.
  • Finalizing Spring 2021 Internship Paperwork – Are you planning on completing an internship in the next term? Be sure to check with the Dunham School’s internship program manager, Brianne Di Pasquantonio, to confirm the status of your internship application and approval. If you are considering an internship for summer or fall 2021, use the winter break to review the internship application and support materials available on the Dunham School webpage. The deadline for a summer 2021 internship is Monday, March 1; the deadline for a fall 2021 internship is Thursday, July 1.
  • Register for Spring 2021 Classes – Have you registered for your spring classes yet? If not, be sure to make this a priority. If you need help registering, please contact your student success advisor at
  • Complete Your FAFSA – Have you completed your FAFSA for 2021–2022 yet? If not, you should do this as soon as possible. If you need support in the FAFSA application process, please contact AU’s Office of Financial Aid at
  • Graduate School – Are you about to graduate? Have you reviewed graduate school options? AU’s Center for Graduate Studies is here to provide you mentoring and support. To request information, schedule a visit, talk to a recruiter, or just learn more about our graduate programs (including the one-year Plus One programs), please feel free to contact me, Professor Jacqueline Babb, or the Center for Graduate Studies.
  • Dean's Office Hours  – Continuing with the tradition I began in spring, I will be available on Zoom for drop-in Dean's Office Hours for students (no appointment required):
    • Sunday, December 6, 6:30–7:30 p.m.
    • Tuesday, December 8, 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m.
    • Wednesday, December 9, 5–6:00 p.m.

There is no formal agenda for these sessions. I will just be available to answer any questions you might have for the wrap up of fall 2020 and the launch of spring 2021. If you are not able to join during these dates/times, you are also able to contact me directly to schedule a meeting that is convenient for you.

Every year, the time after the Thanksgiving holiday always seems to crash down upon us. It can be a very stressful time of year. However, I know you can make it and finish strong. The decisions you make now regarding the completion of your fall semester and launch of the spring semester will carry with you for many years to follow. By taking a few moments now to complete my checklist, you are setting yourself up for success in the months and years ahead.
