Hello,

It's a week dominated by some choice reissues, headed off by the Forced Nostalgia label who return this week with the first vinyl pressing of a super-rare 1986 tape of micro-tonal synth music and gamelan by Loren Nerell. Sonically and spiritually located somewhere between Craig Leon's 'Nommos', Tangerine Dream's 'Rubycon' and influenced by the music of Harry Partch and the classic Berlin school, it's a fascinating and otherworldly oddity from the nexus of 4th World and New Age music and well recommended to all sonic time-travellers.

Surely one of this week's most unexpected releases is an incredible side of electro-jazz called 'Other Power' by Finnish visionary Pekka Airaksinen. It collects a handful of his works from '78-'85, produced around the same time as his revered 'Buddhas Of Golden Light' LP, and uses a DX-7 and 808 to create a mind-blowing sound situated somewhere between Chris Carter, Francis Bebey and Sun Ra. We're genuinely gobsmacked and reckon this is going to be an end-of year fave. 500 copies = Massively recommended!

And on the gob-smacked front, Vinyl on Demand have done it again with their Years On earth retrospective. Just when you thought the guts of post-punk had been scarped clean, there comes another batch of incredible affecting songcraft and priceless early '80s atmospheres. The 30 tracks of "The Structure Of Change' strongly recall everyone from Coil to Pump, The Cab's and Eyeless In Gaza, and if you know what that means it's a real no brainer.

Gary Sloan and Clone's 'Harmonitalk', meanwhile, is a precious musical oddity rescued from obscurity by the canny operators at Finders Keepers, it presents a genuinely bizarre collection of Harmonica and synth music, virtuoso prog-blues and sci-fi themes conceived in 1980 by a mysterious Alaskan trio. We've still not got a full grasp on its slippery oddness yet, and long may that continue!

Can need little introduction to any of you, but this week's epic box set from Mute offers three CD's of completely unreleased archival material, dug out recently and selected by Irmin Schmidt. The vintage tape reel-style box contains 30 unheard tracks together with a 28-page booklet with exclusive notes by Irmin Schmidt and should be considered a bit of an essential for any self-respecting krautrocker.

And veering back to '73-'74, Bureau B present timely reissues of Conrad Schnitzler's first two solo releases. Respectively titled 'Rot' and 'Blau', they comprise some of the most important, elemental electronic recordings in history, laying a template for Industrial music, improvised electronics and Techno which can't be disputed.

And onto the new stuff, the best of a cool tape batch from Hooker Vision is a new album from Motion Sickness Of Time Travel called 'Chinaberry', her follow-up to an exquisite, eponymous LP on Spectrum Spools. Inspired by imagery of intoxicated birds (the avian type, not friday at Yates'), Rachel Evans is in free flight with soaring vocal structures and lushly airborne synths. There's only 200 copies, so you know what to do…

One year since their '936' LP seduced all within earshot, Peaking Lights return with their first album for Domino's Weird World offshoot. They're still charmingly lo-fi, but there's also a bit of spit and polish that elevates their sound with a fizzing clarity. We're reminded of a wide range of our favourite music from Stereolab, to Cabaret Volatire, to Neu! and Colourbox, and that really can't be a bad thing at all.

And for measure, there's a scuffed diamond to be heard in Sh*t And Shine's 'La Grande Larance Prix' album. They drop the overblown noise - to an extent - to jam out on a crooked axle of bass-heavy motorik loops and choking, noxious tape texture - the aural equivalent of hot-boxing a knackered hot-rod with NWW and Iibiis Rooge. Only 184 copies of this badboy, ya heard?!

On 12" format we see the return of Mark Fell with another KILLER Sensate Focus swinger - essentially SND doing "straight" grooves - beside the standard, limited edition copies of those Demdike edits for Finders Keepers, a brand new and very collectible Ghost Box 7" split from The Advisory Circle and Belbury Poly, and Sandwell District's Function with his 1st new 12" in ages, backed by strong Substance and SCB remixes.

Also out this week, new releases from Lorn, Metamono, Frozen Border, Echospace, Mind Over Mirrors, Dro Carey, Keith Fullerton Whitman, ASC, Blues Control, Co La, Van Dyke Parks, Section 25, DAF, Locked Groove, Jimmy Edgar, Cristian Vogel, 50 Weapons, Swing Ting, Doc Daneeka, Spectrum Spools, Doseone, Bjork, Purity Ring, Lemonade, Alex Cortex, Villalobos and a ruck of re-presses from Surgeon and British Murder Boys.

have yourselves a fabulous week…

Peace! nekkers..xx

Albums of the Week

LOREN NERELL
Point Of Arrival
ELECTRONIC
Forced Nostalgia
LP // £14.99

*Latest release on the excellent Forced Nostalgia imprint, a vinyl edition of a super-rare 1986 tape by sound designer at Oberheim Electronics, Loren Nerell. 500 copies only* Forced Nostalgia make their first physical impression of 2012 with a vinyl edition of a mystical 1986 tape by gamelan enthusiast and Berlin school composer Loren Nerell. A contemporary of Steve Roach and collaborator with Steve Reich, Kronos Quartet, Paul Haslinger and L. Subramaniam, Nerell has a richly varied musical background including research into analog synthesis, and the micro-tonal techniques of Harry Partch, complemented by his studies in Anthropology and Ethnomusicology. The bat-eared Forced Nostalgia imprint have shrewdly selected his debut release - an enigmatic and hypnotic side sonically and spiritually located somewhere between Craig Leon's 'Nommos', 23 Skidoo's 'Urban Gamelan' and Tangerine Dream's 'Rubycon' - for reissue. Utilising studio skills as a sound designer at Oberheim Electronics, together with his masters studies in Balinese ceremonial music, Nerell created an enveloping rhythmelodic experience with the help of contributors Steve Roach, Richard Burmer and Ann DeJarnet. From the interweaving tribal rhythm sequences of opener 'Eidolon', the album dilates to cover the haunting chorales of 'Soundscape' and rippling machine minimalism of 'Matrix', before the lushly soporific synth drift of 'Growth', conceived with assistance from Steve Roach. Berlin school themes define the re-entry into expansive cyberdelic B-side 'Waves of Time'. Polyphonic keys and simulated celestial winds carry us across cyberreal topographies accompanied by chanting shamans to then-advanced (now charmingly evocative) holo-zones of lucidly organised dreamscapes. It's a vivid glimpse of a future past, re-implanted in the present and highly recommended to all sonic time-travellers.

GARY SLOAN AND CLONE
Harmonitalk
SYNTHWAVE / ELECTRO
Finders Keepers Records
LP // £13.99

Amazing, utterly unique synth/prog/pop oddity from 1980, given a new lease of life by Finders Keepers (good luck trying to find the original LP on KM Records private press - you won't). A trio led by the mysterious Gary Sloan - whose harmonica, subjected to various electronic treatments and manipulations, is the lead instrument throughout - scaling giddy heights of new age majesty on 'Good Indian' and soloing gaily over the tautest, grooviest analogue pulsations on 'Harmonitalk'. Just when you think you've got a grasp on this album though, it confounds you: 'Together Again' is an unreconstructed, virtuoso prog-blues jam, 'Mind Script Vacation Pernit 35-17' is a bizarre science fiction skit, and 'Backporch Blues' is as organic and homespun as music, never mind electronic music, gets. The epic, 10-minute 'Glacier Suite' and sublime, fanfare-for-a-foggy-morn closer 'Blue Ice' complete a musical journey unlike any other we can think of. Fans of Wolfgang Dauner, Juergen Mueller, Holger Czukay and Jean Piche - frankly anyone drawn to eccentric, visionary electronic music - need to get a load of this.

ELECTRONIC
HOOKER VISION
Cassette // £5.99

**Edition of 200 copies only** Rachel Evans follows up an acclaimed eponymous LP for Spectrum Spools with a blissful tape for her Hooker Vision label. The concept behind 'Chinaberry' is explained thus, "The chinaberry fruit is poisonous to humans but birds are immune to the effects of the poison and, in fact, use the fruit as an intoxicant. On Chinaberry, Rachel Evans effortlessly evokes a floating paradise of drunken birds." Her drunken flight of fancy manifests as a two part swirl of gently arcing synth glissandi and airborne vocals on the A-side beside a cascading beauty called 'Waiting Is The Hard Part' (which could really use a vinyl release!). B-side is given to two longer pieces: the slow rising, spectral drone-pop mirage of 'A Thought', and a featherlight layering of vocals and slowly descending synth tones on 'Restless, Sleepless'. Gorgeous stuff - grab one while you can.

CAN
The Lost Tapes
INDIE / ROCK / ALTERNATIVE
Mute
3CD Box Set // £26.99

**Limited edition 3CD set in a vinyl-sized 10"x10" box containing 30 unreleased tracks and 28-page booklet with exclusive notes by Irmin Schmidt and Ian Harrison housed in vintage reel-style box** "The Lost Tapes was curated by Irmin Schmidt and Daniel Miller, compiled by Irmin Schmidt and Jono Podmore, and edited by Jono Podmore. When the legendary Can studio in Weilerswist was sold to the German Rock N Pop Museum, they bought everything, including the army mattresses that covered the walls for sound protection, and relocated it to Gronau. Whilst dismantling the studio, master tapes were found and stored in the Spoon archive. With barely legible labelling, no one was sure what was on these until Irmin Schmidt and long time collaborator Jono Podmore started to go through over 30 hours of music. What they found was years of archived material, not outtakes, but rather tracks which had been shelved for a variety of reasons – soundtracks to films that were never released and tracks that didn’t make it onto the final versions of albums due to space.Irmin Schmidt explains “Obviously the tapes weren’t really lost, but were left in the cupboards of the studio archives for so long everybody just forgot about them. Everybody except Hildegard, who watches over Can and its work like the dragon over the gold of the Nibelungen and doesn’t allow forgetting.” The final cut of tracks, dating from 1968-1977, features studio material recorded at Schloss Nörvenich and Can Studio, Weilerswist with the Can line up of Holger Czukay on bass, Michael Karoli on guitars, Jaki Liebezeit on drums and Irmin Schmidt on keyboards, and on most tracks, vocals from Malcolm Mooney or Damo Suzuki. Can’s influence is well known and far-reaching and the impact they made on music is felt today as keenly as it ever has been. They themselves have always been impossible to classify and reflecting this, the scope of artists who in recent years have cited Can as a major influence is varied from John Lydon to Radiohead, The Fall to Portishead. With a phenomenal canon of work that includes Tago Mago, which celebrated its 40th Anniversary in 2011 (the anniversary release was awarded 5* from MOJO, Uncut, Artrocker and Record Collector), The Lost Tapes is an opportunity to hear unreleased material from this iconic band – whoever thought that would be possible?"

PEAKING LIGHTS
Lucifer
ELECTRONIC
WEIRD WORLD
LP // £14.99

**Limited edition heavyweight coloured vinyl - Includes digital download voucher redeemable form the label** We hardly need to tell you how much we fell for Peaking Lights’ debut album ‘936’, so there’s a fair bit of excitement buzzing around the band’s follow-up, not least as it sees them move from indie dance petri dish Not Not Fun to the Domino-affiliated Weird World imprint. Thankfully the kooky duo’s lo-fidelity charm is left intact, and while there’s a polish to ‘Lucifer’ that certainly wasn’t present on its predecessor; their signature CRT flicker still makes each song fizz and shine. If it’s at all possible, ‘Lucifer’ manages to take the duo’s sound into even more horizontal places, blending echo-laced dub electronics with the kind of downtempo Space Age Bachelor Pad Music that Stereolab used to capture our hearts with back in simpler times. Indra Dunis’s coos curl distinctly through the electronic percussion and tape-saturated organs with a hypnotic intensity, breaking what might be songs down into lucid dreamscapes and haunted vision quests. We’re reminded of Moonshake, Neu!, La Dusseldorf, Colourbox and Cabaret Voltaire, and what Peaking Lights have managed to achieve is to distil all of these influences and emerge with a coherent, addictive sound all of their own.

PEKKA AIRAKSINEN
Other Power
SOUNDTRACKS / LIBRARY / EARLY ELECTRONIC
HARMONIA
LP // £12.99

**Absolutely incredible early 80's spiralling DX-7 synth vortices and exotic 808 drum machine hallucinations - limited edition of 500 copies** Stunning Finnish electro-jazz-psychedelia from '78-'85 rescued from the tape archives of The Sperm's Pekka Airaksinen. This definitely isn't Harmönia's usual Skweee fayre, yet neatly contextualises their wave of quirkily futurist (often absurd) electro-fonk in line with Pekka's pioneering work experimenting with drum machines and synths, perhaps best heard on his groundbreaking 'One Point Music' LP, which was bootlegged to great acclaim in 2011 (scarce originals are over £500 2nd hand). His 1984 album 'Buddhas Of Golden Light' is acknowledged by the Harmönia staff as one of their all-time favourite records and after they learnt that there was unreleased material from the same period they obviously did the right thing and released it on vinyl. The music is no less than mind-blowing, and ranges from spiralling DX-7 synth vortices to deliciously exotic 808 drum machine poly-patter and crystal clear kosmiche hallucinations. From first listens our highlights have to be the eight minutes of heat-hazed synth flutter and lilting rhythmic cadence on 'Simha', plus the hybrid, proto-Drexciyan lounge jazz of 'Suvarnaratnakaracchatrakuta', and the mind-bendingly advanced sci-fi noir atmospheres and arrangement of 'Maitreya', but quite honestly we reckon the whole thing's going to be a firm favourite before the year's end. Maybe imagine Chris Carter, Conrad Schnitzler and Francis Bebey tripping on vodka and mushies with Circle after meditating under a midday moon and you're somewhere within grasp of the outright brilliance contained within. Right, so who going to do a whip-round and buy us an original copy of 'Buddhas Of Golden Light', then? Massively recommended!

YEARS ON EARTH
The Structure Of Chance
SYNTHWAVE / ELECTRO
Vinyl On Demand
2LP // £21.99

**This is so damn good - think Faith-era The Cure, Raime, Joy Division, Pump, Coil, Cabaret Voltaire - basically, an absolute find. Double LP in heavyweight, tip-on style gatefold jacket with pull-out liner notes and certificate of ownership. Individually numbered edition of 500** Thank f*ck for Frank Maier. His Vinyl On Demand label have unearthed another obscure gem from the murky abyss of '80s tape culture in the form of a comprehensive Years On Earth retrospective. Hailing from Northampton, reared on rock, radiophonica (BBC Workshop, David Vorhaus) and almost anything else with a synth in it - YMO to Kraftwerk, Mad Professor and Stockhausen - the duo of Bob Roke and Mebz created a claustrophobic internal world which was shared only thru the dedicated and independant tape-swapping network which stretched from Canada to Switzerland and further abroad. They only released three tapes proper, 'Same' (1981). 'Site' (1982), and 'Worlds Apart' (1983) before disbanding after 1984 due to studies and "[a] deep black hole". They'd probably be left to the annals if it were not for the efforts of a Swiss tape dealer and VOD, who've collected all those sides together with a cherry-picked bonus run of unreleased material. The music is purely symptomatic of the freedom that the tape network afforded, unbound by pop restraints and equally unforced to flesh it out for mass consumption. What remains are 30 tracks of deeply dystopian experiments, ranging from compelling, Coil-like  songcraft of 'Suspicion' and the dreary industrial ambience of 'Memories' to Eyeless In Gaza-esque communiques from the void on 'What Does It Mean?' or the siren-sounding sci-fi scapes of 'Radiation'. As to be expected, the fidelity varies from time to time - it does span five years and numerous equipment changes - but there's an unarguably consistent quality of suburban ennui and atmospheric gloom, coupled with an empty-stomach minimalism which really hits the mark. Highly recommended to fans of '80s municipal architecture and the bleakest moments of Throbbing Gristle, Eyeless In Gaza, Pump, Joy Division, Cabaret Voltaire etc.

CONRAD SCHNITZLER
Rot
ELECTRONIC
Bureau B
CD // £11.49

Timely reissue of the late Konrad Schnitzler's (1937-2011) seminal debut solo album. Nothing short of a milestone in the history of electronic music, 'Rot' marked a radical point where man and musical machine became far better acquainted. Up to this point in 1973 Schnitzler had already been integral to the genesis of both Tangerine Dream and Kluster, both bands born of the Zodiac Free Arts Lab in West Berlin during the pivotal year of 1968. And by '73, the convergence of subversive, counter-cultural philosophy and his studies under German Fluxus member and avant-garde artist Joseph Beuys converged in the stark grammar and uncompromising logic of his solo debut. It's a monolothic statement, shirking the shackles of prior academic praxis and forging an instinctively steely sort of psychedelia embracing Beuys' "extended definition of art" to act as a bold conduit for the alien and, quite importantly, "new music" and sounds made possible by analog synthesis. With this album he physically shaped a new sound world, unafraid of using all of his machine's atonal and motorik capabilities to express something elemental and uniquely nuanced like little else before or since. Quite simply, it's heavier and more psychedelic than almost anything else from the same era, and yet somehow does it all with a wry sense of groove which was effectively prototypical Techno, and a rare humour found in the track titles 'Krautrock', and 'Meditation'. It's a crucial addition to any connoisseur's electronic music collection.

CONRAD SCHNITZLER
Blau
ELECTRONIC
Bureau B
CD // £11.49

'Blau' is the colour-coded 1974 follow-up to Konrad Schnitzler's solo debut album after working on the first albums from Tangerine Dream and Kluster. With it, he effectively continues the motorik trajectory of his momentous debut, instinctively mainlining his beguiling logic further into an inverted abyss where harmony and melody are rejected in favour of synthetic expression and the joy of revelling in pure electronic timbre. Inspired by the contemporary avant-garde - most specifically the Fluxus actions of his former tutor Joseph Beuys - and with a staunchly Berlin-like attitude towards rhythm, Schnitzler detached himself from tradition, from successive waves of Anglo-American pop music, and from the minimalist musics of new American composers like Steve Reich. Instead, he found his own elemental form of music with emphasis on rhythmic linearity and a taste for metallic electronic dissonance with warrants his unofficial title as a godfather of Industrial music. As Asmus Titechens points out in the great introduction, strictly speaking this isn't a solo album as there are contributions from his Kluster bandmates Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius, but you can definitely tell who's in control. Play loud for maximum impact. Highly recommended!

TECHNO / HOUSE
FROZEN BORDER
2LP // £11.99

**8 tracks taken from the CD version** Berlin's Frozen Border label round up their top boys and girls for a reet boot off down the parade. The label's first compilation boasts exclusive material from Blawan, Skirt, Szare, AnD, Mary Velo, Buck and more, focussed on a narrow bandwidth of pure, unadulterated Techno. Highlights have to be HG's gloomy, pulsing remix of Skirt's 'Colider', #4.26's Detroit-inspired shaker 'Tharin' and that swingeing Blawan cut 'Tuesday's March'. Strong stuff.

SH*T AND SHINE
La Grand Larance Prix
ELECTRONIC
Riot Season
CD // £11.99

**Limited edition of 184 copies** Succumbing to demand, Riot Season offer Sh*t and Shine's 'Le Grande Larance Prix' housed in hand-cut and printed card wallet CD sleeves. It's probably their most minimal and dance-floor friendly release to date, opting for hypnotic voodoo sludge rhythms and cross-eyed loop meditation rather than their typically overblown noise dynamic. Salted machine rhythms and vocals are choked by exhaust fumes and caked in dust on dangerously noxious opener 'Flirtations At A Cocktail Party', while the slow motorik throbber 'Frankie's Theme' bobbles along in a solvent-huffing haze of digital filter resonance and sickeningly mesmeric melody for a steadily unsettling 15 minutes. There's even a sort of yodelling dub-disco tilt to 'Switching 2 Nite Mode' and 'Frenchy's Automotive' lies int he back seat, taking a stoned break from the wheel to daydream over muddied radiowaves and heat-shimmer string drifts beside the baked Industrial estate crawl of 'How To Rattle A White Tailed Buck' and a head-siphoning rock'n'roll psych swirl called 'Klipp'. Fans of earlier James Ferraro, Nurse With Wound's loopier, rockier stuff, or Astral Social Club and High Wolf's Iibiis Rooge are recommended to fill their boots.

CONRAD SCHNITZLER / RICARDO VILLALOBOS & MAX LODERBAUER
Zug: Reshaped and Remodeled
TECHNO / HOUSE
m=minimal
LP // £12.99

**Includes digital download voucher for the full release plus bonus tracks - redeemable from the label** Essential remixes of Conrad Schnitzler by Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer. Sprawling, side-long workouts by Villalobos are no longer a novelty by any stretch of the imagination, but believe us when we say that the 'Sorgenkind-mix' of Schnitzler's 'Zug' genuinely counts among the finest productions of the Chilean's career thus far. He and his studio partner Loderbauer (Sun Electric, NSI, Moritz von Oswald Trio) bring the same exploratory yet forensically focussed approach to this project as they did to their reconstruction of the ECM catalogue last year. Once again, the technical precision, and the sonic sensitivity, that the duo display borders on the mystical - this is music of unfathomable depth and detail, but also, unlike the ECM versions, real drive. Schnitzler, the former Tangerine Dream and Kluster member who passed away last year, and whose pioneering electronic work has been extensively reissued by Bureau B, originally self-released Zug on cassette - the now fabled Red Tape. Bureau B gave the original, remastered by Pole and Kassian Troyer, a proper vinyl pressing in 2010, before handing over the source material to Villalobos and Loderbauer, who have finally emerged from their Berlin bunker with these two 20-minute+ "reshapings". The Aktion-mix is an elongated dancefloor cut, powered by a pert, propulsive 4/4 pattern and detuned bass, and is totally compelling in itself; but it's the B-side Sorgenkind-mix that has our jaws scraping the floor. It's honestly quite hard to do justice in words to its immersive, dub-infused sound design, which gives due space and prominence to Schnitzler's eerie, strafing synth tones, while exploring psycho-acoustic back-roads that the German wizard could only have dreamed of. Astonishingly good.

SENSATE FOCUS
12" // £9.99

Second drop from Mark Fell on the custom Editions Mego sub-label he's been given to explore his favourite house music tropes at length. The first Sensate Focus 12" made explicit the link between the avant programming of SND and the swung dancefloor gear that rules the contemporary clubscape, and Sensate Focus 5 deepens the dialogue. On 'X', sweeping synth-lines and pellucid keys, accented with cut-up vocal pressure, ride irresistible drum patterns that sound like they're being punched-out live on the buttons of a Casio, while 'Y' is on an even slinkier tip, with dainty UKG-style arpeggios hopskotching over steppers' kicks and claps. Skewed genius, recommended to everyone, but especially those of you who've always been attuned to the dancefloor dynamism latent in Fell's outwardly more "serious" work of yore. Limited copies only - so damn fine.

Ghost Box

Another bite-sized offering from the ever on-point Ghost Box estate, this slice comes from two of the label’s hardest hitters – The Advisory Circle and Belbury Poly. Jim Jupp’s Belbury Poly emerges fresh from the acclaim surrounding the fantastic ‘Belbury Tales’ LP from earlier this year and turns in a low-light neo-disco charmer in the shape of ‘Now In The Beginning’. Like a spiritual concoction of 60s Hammer soundtracks and Studio 54’s lighter moments, this is yet another winner from The Reverend himself. Jon Brooks takes it on himself to move things into even greener pastures with the neon-drenched ‘Wildspot’, a track no doubt influenced by his recent collaborations with man-of-the-moment Pye Corner Audio. Prime post-Carpenter electroid business here, with the kind of chiming Britishness you always hope to get from the Ghost Box crew. Unmissable stuff, of course!

RAMESSES
Possessed By The Rise Of Magik
Ritual Productions
2LP // £27.99

Following the chunky ‘Chrome Pineal’ EP, ‘Possessed by the Rise of Magik’ is the latest from Dorset slow-core metallers Ramesses, and should have all of you sludge heads rubbing yer hands with glee. Sounding like it was recorded in the bowels of Satan’s terrace in Wednesbury, this is not a record for people who like their metal clean and technical. Rather ‘Possessed…’ sounds like metal used to sound, like the...
SCYTHLING
Smokefall
AURORA BOREALIS
CD // £9.99

Blooming heavy atmospheric doom sludge improvisations from Aidan Baker (Nadja, Whisper Room, Infinite Light) and Josh Rothenberger (Bloody Panda), recorded live in Brookly 2008, and later augmented with guest musicians. The resultant 'Smokefall' revolves around three lengthy pieces sweeping between ultra-slow doom crushers to plangent ambient and darkly psychedelic folk and black metal atmospheres. An impressive album, one to really get lost in. For fans of Ocean, Æthenor, Nadja.

Perseus Traxx pays homage to the edit techniques of Frankie Knuckles, Ron Hardy and Larry Levan with four forgotten House and disco classics augmented for the party. IKE 'N' MIKE
Logic Family / Highly Illogical
Fresh Up Records
7" // £5.99

DMX Krew presents two new, old-sounding Ike N Mike jams - some of their raunchiest to date. 'Logic Family' cuts loose on the Moog with beaming Boogie funk flavour and 'Highly Illogical' hauls out the axe on a burning, uptempo percolator. Smiles for miles.

On 'Cosyland' the vocals are pushed up close and intimate on a swaying waltz, whereas 'Get Laid Back' harnesses portside guitar strokes and breezy synths on a grinding bass arpeggio. Reminding of their provenance, 'Cocaine Cool (extended Vol2)' revamps their greatest hit, and '101 Part Two' slips back into dreamy disco molasses mode....

**Original, previously unreleased Bristol reggae with hints of jazz from 1980** "An influential figure on the Bristol reggae scene since the 1970s, Bunny Marrett has been shamefully neglected on record with just two tracks on the A side of a 1981 Shoc Wave 12” his sole output, although his compositions have fared somewhat better having been recorded and released by both Black Roots and Delroy Ogilvie. **Handstamped reverse-card jacket** Modeselektor and Moderat compile the white label remixes of their abum tracks from SBTRKT, T++, Siriusmo, Shackleton, Roska, and Headhunter. It's practically worth it for the Shackleton remix of 'Rusty Nails' alone (if you don't already own it), while the T++ remix of the same cut is a very solid DJ tool and that Roska remix of 'Art & Cash' is still very rinseworthy.
SWING TING
Head Gone
FAT CITY
12" // £6.99

Samrai & Platt wade in with a deadly 2nd Swing Ting 12", blessed by the indomitable Manchester singjay, Fox and backed with a Chimpo murder. Like a perfect distillation of their eponymous monthly dance (Manchester's best, if you ask us), 'Head Gone' rules the 'floor with a poised blend of soundsystem mimetics; fusing Dhol-like percussion, stepping Bassline wamp and deep-fried bleeps with a basement dread atmosphere reeking of Guinness export...

The Antipodean beat-freak vents a cracking 2nd 12" for Will Bankhead's Trilogy Tapes. You'll be glad to know that Carey's still well out his own, wronging R&B templates and lo-fi 'tronics with visionary finesse and the crookedest style. Murdah Strings EP
ROSKA KICKS & SNARES
12" // £5.99

UK funky mainstay Doc Daneeka is back with maybe his finest cut to date here as he hijacks some Bernard Herrmann style horror sounds on 'Murdah Strings'. With the kind of conga-led percussive flourishes Daneeka drops you'd think you were back in funky's glory days, but there's something more sinister under the hood. *Strictly limited one-sided 12" pressing, includes an infinite locked-groove at the end of the side* Blimey, this is a bit good. We've spoken before about Not Not Fun's brilliantly disposable aesthetic, and Peaking Lights' fantastically enjoyable '936' album from last year epitomozed everything we love about it; delivering rough, unpolished, vulnerable and giddy recordings without too much care for all those things you'd associate with 'grown up' music. *Some copies on coloured vinyl* Following the mind-blowingly good 'Generators' LP comes 'Occlusions', Boston-based electronic music agitator Keith Fullerton Whitman's 'companion piece'. Described as the free jazz to 'Generators'' minimalist shakes, 'Occlusions' is an appropriate showcase of Keith's deranged anti-dance-music experiments. 'Blau' is the colour-coded 1974 follow-up to Konrad Schnitzler's solo debut album after working on the first albums from Tangerine Dream and Kluster. The follow-up to legendary American eccentric Van Dyke Parks' 'Discover America', 'Clang of the Yankee Reaper' further delves into his obsession with Caribbean calypso music. "Band of Holy Joy’s first new songs since their How to Kill a Butterfly album was released to universal acclaim at the close of 2011 (including album of the year at Beat Surrender)! And whilst that album moved through some dark places, Wyrd Beautiful Thyme finds love and life in chaos embracing the pockets of joy that can still be found even as the world spirals into hell. Reissue of The Cabs' 1982 Tokyo session 'Hai!' featuring the reorganised line-up of Stephen Mallinder and Richard H Kirk joined by Alan "Raw" Fish on percussion after the departure of Chris Watson. The quality of the recording is slightly lacking as it was a live performance transferred from vinyl back in 1991 (they lost the masters, doh!), but it still gives a sharp taste of their newer, funked-up direction signified...
CHAINS OF LOVE

"With an intoxicating energy, Vancouver-based, Chains of Love's sun-soaked romantic pop is injected with the stomp of vintage 60s soul, the wild abandon of 70s garage, and the guitar grime of The Cramps and early JAMC. The group formed when guitarist, Felix Fung, the engineer and owner of Vancouver’s Little Red Sound, hatched a plan to start a girl group with Nathalia Pizzaro. LP // £13.99

It's hard to believe that 'The End of Music' is only the second album from Swedish dream poppers De La Mancha. While ‘Innocence Man’ might be Manchester 4-piece Easter’s debut album, locals have probably caught the band in one of their many electric live shows recently. It’s a combination that doesn’t often work, but these guys are veterans and rarely does a note go out of...

SECOND LANGUAGE
CD // £11.99

"The 11th official album by Anglo-French popular underground oxymoron, Piano Magic, ‘Life Has Not Finished With Me Yet’, sees the group emerging from beneath the wreckage of previous guitar-heavy albums to re-investigate the darker, more electronic sonic themes of their earlier work. Instant parallels will inevitably be drawn with the ghostly chamber pop of 1999’s ‘Artists Rifles’ and the even earlier surreal romanticism of ‘Low Birth Weight’. At the core,...

Fanstastic sophomore release from young Texan, Bryce Isbell aka Fur. It's another proper ace from UNO NYC, swerving to intimate House music with an outsider/bedroom sensibility. There's warm allusions to the sensuality of soft, synth-swaddled Berlin House music and sweeter UK Bass memes, but with a shyer, almost coy twist, best heard on the slowed Jersey skip of the title track and in the R&B-infused glyde of 'Hands'.

He and his...
ANTHONE
Aloof EP
Weevil Neighbourhood
12" // £6.99

**Numbered edition of 300 copies in hand-stamped paper sleeve** Anthone makes a debut incision of Breakbeat Techno for the Weevil Neighbourhood series. 'Destabilize' forms a lattice of interlocking polyrhythms and sweeping synth moves over the sort of bowel-churning bass we could imagine appearing in a Surgeon set meshed with some Industrial thwacker while 'Aloof' sets scurrying hi-hat trills in a sub-sunk and glitched 2-step pattern reminding of Point B. 'Rebound'...
B.D.I. PRESENTS COMPASSION CREW
Paper Tears
RUNNING BACK
12" // £8.99

After a clutch of Industrial-House winners for Rush Hour, B.D.I. presents Compassion Crew for Offenbach's Running Back set. On 'Paper Tears' he rustles up a Boogie-spiked "Vatican House" groove layering hypnotic chants and lush chords on a simmering, Loft-ready bassline. B-side's 'Same Victory, Same Mistakes' rubs staggered kicks and crispy 707 percussion on a proper Ron Hardy-styled wavey track-jam, bam bam, and there's a 'Tribal Tears Dub' for kinky dark...
CRACKAZAT
Tunnel
Futureboogie Recordings
12" // £6.99

Crackazat makes a smart vinyl debut with three tracks of accomplished, fruity and fresh-sounding Disco House. A-side 'Tunnel' spins out nine minutes of swinging percussive syncopation and grubbing electro bass lines with soaring synths to pop your cork to. The sun-dappled sound takes a smoother, filtered approach with the rolling congas and nimble bass work of 'Book On The Beach' flipside, next to a deckside slow groove called 'Panick Aggressive'...
PITTSBURGH TRACK AUTHORITY VS. NICE REC
PGHTRX 002
PITTSBURGH TRACKS
12" // £9.99

Skillful, tastefully done Jazzy House grooves from the respected PTA and his buddy Nice Rec. Sweetly tucked drums, hovering electric vibraphone chords and twinkling keys create the elegant frisson of 'Rotunda', while 'Snap Off' coolly plays on a minimal Deep House theme accentuated with slivers of synth and plangent finger pops. 'Get Out Of Your Head' is our percy, a more insistent, railroading groove built with swinging drums and impeccably...
SUPERPITCHER
Moon Fever Remixe
Kompakt
12" // £6.99

Lawrence and Gluteus Maximus (President Bongo of Gus Gus and Jack Schidt) turn Superpitcher's 'Moon Fever' into elegant and darkly dramatic House versions. Dial Records boss and German House stalwart Lawrence rolls out a svelte and engrossing mix flush with symphonic builds and effortless rhythms, plus a glacial, piano and synth-lead ambient mix. The Gluteus Maximus mix is in it for the long haul - the sort of epic European...
