’Tis The Season to Show Your Patriot Spirit!
1. Nominate your favorite teacher as the 2017 YHS Teacher of the Year: We are lucky to have so many wonderful teachers at Yorktown -- please help us shine the spotlight on someone who contributes to our students’ success! Nominations are due by Friday, January 6. Teachers, Librarians, Guidance Counselors, Reading Specialists and Technical Specialists are all eligible. Anyone—students, parents, teachers and other staff—can nominate someone for this award. For details and to submit a nomination, please contact Cindy Kilmer at
2. Surprise a Patriot fan with Yorktown Spiritwear: Grandma will look great in a YHS t-shirt or sweatshirt that shows school pride and supports the Yorktown PTA! Pictures of available options are at
http://www.yhspta.org/buy-yhs-gear/. Contact Spiritwear Chair Lindsay Levy at lylevy@clilffclimber.com to make a purchase and get your gear before the holidays.
3. Shop at Amazon Smile and designate “Yorktown High PTA” as the beneficiary: It is easy to use and our school will receive a .05% donation from Amazon for every purchase you make through
www.smile.amazon.com. The PTA just received our first $50 check from Amazon and we are excited to put these funds to good use supporting our students’ educational opportunities.

All new show at Yorktown next Tuesday, December 20th at 7:00pm in the Black Box!  Come see our first Original Radio Drama Festival, brought to you by Yorktown’s Literary Magazine, Theatre Arts III class, and the Technical Theatre Club.  Free Admission!
The radio dramas you will experience are based on old time radio shows, which used “Foley Sounds” -- sound effects that were created on the spot using whatever means necessary to re-create the desired sound. Back in the days of no HDTV (gasp!), people gathered around radios to hear news and listen to adventure, comedy, and dramatic serials being acted out. We will be recreating this type of old time radio dramas, based on scripts written by Lit Mag students, so that you can not only hear the sound effects, but actually see them being created.  Don’t miss Yorktown’s first Original Radio Drama Festival. It’s free – bring friends!

The Arlington Special Education Advisory Committee (ASEAC) Meeting focusing on Reading: achievement data, what interventions and remediation APS has to offer, etc will be heldTuesday, December 20th, 2016, 7:00 ‐ 9:00 PM at the Arlington Public Schools Education Center, 1426 N Quincy Street, Room 101, Arlington, VA 22207

We are now accepting nominations for Yorktown's Teacher of the Year. The deadline is Friday, January 6, 2017.  The lucky nominee will be part of a pool entered into the Arlington Public Schools competition for 2017.  This award is open to all eligible teachers, librarians, guidance counselors, and reading specialists. Any citizen of Arlington can submit a nomination – current and former students, parents, other teachers, and APS staff all welcome. Nominees should be strong participants in Yorktown's activities and possess the following qualities:
  • Ability to inspire students of all backgrounds and abilities to learn
  • Effective communication to a broad audience
  • Respect and admiration of students, families and colleagues
  • Active and useful role in the community as well as in the school
  • Poise and ability to articulate instructional goals and objectives
  • Energy and ability to withstand a taxing schedule
  • Knowledge about their teaching areas and education in general
  • Ability to represent Arlington Public Schools, the Commonwealth of Virginia, or the nation as an exemplar and role model for the teaching profession
Nominations should be in a letter format. Letters can be submitted by an individual or group; if a group please include the name of everyone with your letter. Please explain how the teacher has enriched students' experiences at YHS and include examples. Word docs are preferred and should be sent to cynthiakilmer@verizon.net.  Upon receipt you will receive a confirmation email.  If the teacher you nominate is picked, you may be asked for more information and detail for at a later date. We are looking forward to an amazing turn-out of nominations for our deserving teachers. Unfortunately we can only pick one. Direct questions, comments, letters to cynthiakilmer@verizon.net.

Do you have any friends or associates with a science background?   We could use your help in locating Science Fair judges. A science fair judge needs three things:  (1) to be available on January 28, 2017 from 7:30am to noon; (2) to be familiar with the basic scientific principles, scientific method of experimentation, and hopefully statistics (the last one is a wish!); and (3) to have an open mind, kind heart and really want to interface with teens--that is the KEY to a great scientist being a super judge! One additional note:  Parents who have students in the fair are not always the best options--in fact, we try NOT to have judges who have kids in the fair, because not only could they run into their own, but their kid's friends.  It gets sticky.  If you can help with judge recruitment in anyway please contact Michelle Buehlmann via email.
