Yorktown PTA Partners with Wakefield PTSA and Arlington Groups for Author Talk
The PTA hopes you will join us for a community discussion at Central Library (1015 N. Quincy St.) at 7 p.m.on Tuesday, February 7. The Yorktown PTA and Wakefield PTSA have joined forces with several other Arlington groups to bring in the authors of All American Boys, a Coretta Scott King Honor Award-winning novel. Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely have written about two teens—one black, one white—who grapple with the repercussions of a single violent act that leaves their school, their community, and ultimately, the country bitterly divided by racial tension.
In addition to the community discussion in the evening, the authors will speak to more than 400 Yorktown students during 3rd period and then will head to Wakefield for a forum with their students. Special thanks go to the library staff at both schools for their work on this event!
The Wakefield PTSA has launched a Community Read, encouraging everyone in the community to read the book and join the author talk. Arlington’s One More Page will sell books at the evening event for a book signing. Other groups collaborating in this program include: An Open Book Foundation; APS Minority Achievement Office; Arlington County Public Library; Arlington Partnership for Children, Youth and Families; Challenging Racism; Communities in Schools; Friends of the Library; and the Hyatt Regency Crystal City.

The YHS Class of 2017 will be celebrating graduation on June 21st with an all-night, post-graduation Potomac river cruise. The senior boat party is a special graduation night event that serves two purposes:  1) it gives YHS seniors a super fun, high school send-off and a last big hurrah with all their classmates; and 2) it provides parents peace of mind knowing that our seniors are spending graduation night (from 10pm to 3:00am!) in a safe, chaperoned, alcohol-free environment.  The party is an evening full of fun that includes a DJ, dancing, casino games, photo booth, raffles and food galore! Tickets are $50 and can be ordered on-line at the Yorktown PTA website http://www.yhspta.org. (see ordering information at bottom of home page).  Each ticket includes a T-shirt printed with the names of all 2017 graduates. Don’t miss this one last night to celebrate with your graduating class! Attention Parents — We need your help to make the 2017 Boat Party a success. Watch for future emails calling for volunteers.
