YHS PTA WEEKLY UPDATE 12/9/16
From the PTA President

Next Week at Yorktown: Join the PTA Meeting and Help Thank YHS Teachers and Staff

With the holidays and year-end activities, December is a busy month. But I hope you can find time to join other Yorktown families for two PTA activities next week:

The Yorktown PTA meeting will be held in the library on Monday, December 12, 7:30-8:30 PM. The PTA meeting takes just an hour and provides an opportunity to discuss PTA and school activities taking place at Yorktown this year. At Monday's meeting, we will hear about plans for the 2017 YHS Graduation Boat Party, an update on grocery program sign-ups, results from the community survey on the PTA website redesign, and more. Please join us!

The annual PTA "Snack Attack" for staff and teachers is Wednesday, December 14, 7:30 AM - 1:30 PM.  This PTA activity next week will express our appreciation for Yorktown teachers/staff -- thank you to all who have signed up already to bring snacks to school!  At this writing, there are still 24 slots open for contributions of sweet and savory foods, and for food gift cards. You can sign up here and get details about what is needed and when to drop items off:

YHS CHOIR WHITE HOUSE ORNAMENT FUNDRAISER
The YHS Chamber Choir is once again selling White House Christmas Ornaments to raise money to support our choral program.  The 2016 ornament honors the administration of Herbert Hoover, who served as the 31st President of the United States from 1929 to 1933. It is inspired by the fire trucks that responded to the 1929 Christmas Eve fire at the White House and the toy engines presented to children by the Hoovers the following Christmas. The ornament is crafted from shiny brass plated with nickel and 24-karat gold, and the engine carries a Christmas tree for delivery to the White House. It comes beautifully packaged in a gift box along with colorful historical notes, and makes the perfect holiday gift!  The ornaments cost $25 each and can be ordered from any current YHS Singer or by contacting Noreen Hecmanczuk at n.hecmanczuk@verizon.net.  Orders will be accepted through December 15, 2016.  Thank you in advance for supporting the Yorktown Choral Program!

SCIENCE FAIR JUDGES NEEDED FOR YHS SCIENCE FAIR
Do you have any friends or associates with a science background?   We could use your help in locating Science Fair judges. A science fair judge needs three things:  (1) to be available on January 28, 2017 from 7:30am to noon; (2) to be familiar with the basic scientific principles, scientific method of experimentation, and hopefully statistics (the last one is a wish!); and (3) to have an open mind, kind heart and really want to interface with teens--that is the KEY to a great scientist being a super judge! One additional note:  Parents who have students in the fair are not always the best options--in fact, we try NOT to have judges who have kids in the fair, because not only could they run into their own, but their kid's friends.  It gets sticky.  If you can help with judge recruitment in anyway please contact Michelle Buehlmann via email.
