From The PTA President

Remarks from Dr. Pasi at Yorktown PTA Meeting
One of the points Dr. Pasi made in his remarks at the PTA meeting on Monday was to remind us that at Yorktown, like all high schools, there are students who experiment with or use alcohol or drugs.
Dr. Pasi described the various ways that Yorktown sends messages to students about substance use and its dangers. The school works closely with the Second Chance program and has penalties in place for student use. Dr. Pasi asked whether there is anything that parents want to do together to help deter substance use among teens, for example, during the weekends. If there could be something that involved greater communication among parents, he wondered what that could look like, and said it would not need to be something with or at the school.
The school itself has speakers come in and special programs to educate students on the topic. The Activities department, for example, recently had an evening program: "Creating a Yorktown Community of Caring: A Program for Families on Substance Use Among Student-Athletes." It was well attended and everyone who participated is grateful to the families who shared their personal experiences and lessons learned. We also heard from speakers who work with Arlington students on prevention and treatment initiatives, and we appreciate the compassion and commitment they bring to helping young people.
At the program in December, the Arlington Partnership for Children, Youth and Families presented the latest YHS data from their regular surveys of APS students. The most recent showed that 3 in 10 Yorktown seniors had been drunk in the past two weeks, and 1 in 3 had ridden with a drinking driver in the past 30 days. Half of the 10th and 12th graders surveyed at Yorktown don’t think marijuana is dangerous 1-2 times per week.

Please note that this will be a topic for discussion at the next PTA meeting on February 13. Dr. Pasi welcomes any ideas parents want to share; these can be sent to ray.pasi@apsva.us or president@yhspta.org.
