Yorktown PTA Offers Learning Opportunities
I learn something new at every Yorktown PTA meeting, whether it is from Dr. Pasi discussing a school activity, a PTA Chair reporting on a program, or a guest speaker with expertise on a topic relevant to high school families.
It is an hour well spent, and I invite all Yorktown parents and guardians to join us for our next meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, January 23(cafeteria). Here are some agenda highlights:
*2017 Teacher of the Year Award: Math teacher Cara Saavedra is the 2017 Yorktown Teacher of the Year! On Monday, PTA Chair Cindy Kilmer will summarize the selection process and the many nominations received. Ms. Saavedra has been recognized for her outstanding credentials, her creativity and ability to make math fun, and her willingness to work with colleagues and students on new ideas and challenging content. She has taught everything from Algebra I to Multi-Variable Calculus, and has served as a class sponsor and assistant girls soccer coach. Congratulations to Ms. Saavedra and thank you to all who sent in a nomination!
*How to Raise Financially Responsible Teens: Special guest speaker and Yorktown parent Chuchi Arevalo, CFA, CFE, will share with the PTA his more than 20 years of professional expertise in finance and the lessons he has learned as Founder and CEO of the innovative SPARK Business Academy (
www.sparkbusinessacademy.com). His presentation to the PTA will draw from his organization’s classes and summer camps designed to empower students with essential life skills on financial literacy and entrepreneurship. We’re looking forward to this!
*Reports on Yorktown School Events: Several PTA Chairs will report at the meeting, including Boat Party Co-Chair Stacy Collins, Membership Chair Lindsay Levy, and Junior Class Liaison Brigitta Pari. Also, it is always a pleasure to hear what Dr. Pasi has to say about what has been going on at Yorktown since our last meeting.
The PTA’s Family Network Committee offers another learning opportunity on Tuesday, January 24, with Arlington’s Second Chance program (7 to 9 p.m., Patriot Hall). This free program is designed to help Arlington middle and high school students who are in the early stages of drug or alcohol use. Teens learn about the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol and how using either affects their physical and mental health. For more information, please contact
information@secondchance.org or visit www.secondchancearlington.org.

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe has designated Jan. 22-28, 2017 as Principal Appreciation Week. In his Governor’s Proclamation, McAuliffe stated, “The role of the principal as the instructional leader of the school is critically important to ensure students are provided the opportunity to learn. Our principals work diligently to help students and teachers excel, and their leadership and hard work are essential to the success of our schools. They deserve all the recognition and praise we can give them. Help us celebrate by thanking a principal on social media! Tweet your thanks using @DrPasiYHS during Principal Appreciation Week.

The YHS Class of 2017 will be celebrating graduation on June 21st with an all-night, post-graduation Potomac river cruise. The senior boat party is a special graduation night event that serves two purposes:  1) it gives YHS seniors a super fun, high school send-off and a last big hurrah with all their classmates; and 2) it provides parents peace of mind knowing that our seniors are spending graduation night (from 10pm to 3:00am!) in a safe, chaperoned, alcohol-free environment.  The party is an evening full of fun that includes a DJ, dancing, casino games, photo booth, raffles and food galore!
Tickets are $50 and can be ordered on-line at the Yorktown PTA website
http://www.yhspta.org. (see ordering information at bottom of home page).  Each ticket includes a T-shirt printed with the names of all 2017 graduates. Don’t miss this one last night to celebrate with your graduating class!
Attention Parents — We need your help to make the 2017 Boat Party a success. Watch for future emails calling for volunteers. Contact Stacy Collins (
mstacycollins@verizon.net)  if you have questions.

Yorktown Theatre invites you to participate behind the scenes for the spring musical Pippin! If you aren’t an actor, but want to be part of the Pippin team – join the Technical Theatre Crew. Performances will be March 30 and 31, 2017 at 7:00pm, and April 1st, at 2:00 and 7:00pm.  Tech Theatre crew members build and paint sets, help make costumes, learn how to operate the sound and light boards, make props, and help keep the show running smoothly.  If you are interested, come to the organizational meeting for Pippin Tech Theatre Crew, on Thursday, January 26, 2017, at 3:15pm in the Theatre Black Box.  You are also invited to attend the Tech Theatre Club meetings, every Tues/Thurs, from 3:15 – 5:00.  For more information, see Mr. Roberts in the Theatre Office (rm 189). Don’t miss your chance to be involved in Yorktown Theatre Arts!

As is tradition, the PTA's Hospitality Committee will be providing breakfast for the volunteer judges and teachers at the YHS Science Fair on Saturday, January 28, 2017.  We need your help to make it a success!  We will be providing breakfast to approximately 100-130 folks who are volunteering their time to help our students.  Please consider donating any of the various breakfast foods described on our SignUp Genius page (see link below), including bagels, homemade baked goods, quiche, fruit and/or juice.  The Hospitality Committee will take care of the coffee and paper supplies. To sign up, please go to www.SignUpGenius.com/go/10C0848ADA92CAA8-yhs2017 and indicate what you would like to contribute.  Please then plan to drop off your contribution at the YHS cafeteria between 6:30 am and 6:45 am on January 28th.  If you'd prefer not to get up that early on a Saturday (which is understandable), please contact Heidi Robbins at hfrobbins@me.com  to make arrangements to drop your contribution off at her house before Saturday the 28th. Thank you in advance for your support.  Please feel free to contact Heidi Robbins hfrobbins@me.com, Lynn Mullins mullinz6@aol.com,  or Jan DeFalco jandefalco@gmail.com, if you have any questions about the breakfast.

Parents please join YHS’s Family Network for an informative panel discussion on Arlington’s Second Chance program on Tuesday, January 24, from 7:00-9:00 in Patriot Hall.  Second Chance is a free program designed to help Arlington middle and high school students who are in the early stages of drug or alcohol use. Do you have any friends or associates with a science background?   We could use your help in locating Science Fair judges. A science fair judge needs three things:  (1) to be available on January 28, 2017 from 7:30am to noon; (2) to be familiar with the basic scientific principles, scientific method of experimentation, and hopefully statistics (the last one is a wish!); and (3) to have an open mind, kind heart and really want to interface with teens--that is the KEY to a great scientist being a super judge! One additional note:  Parents who have students in the fair are not always the best options--in fact, we try NOT to have judges who have kids in the fair, because not only could they run into their own, but their kid's friends.  It gets sticky.  If you can help with judge recruitment in anyway please contact Michelle Buehlmann via email.
