|From The PTA President
Happy New Year to the Yorktown School Community!
I hope everyone had a terrific winter break! Did you make a resolution to be more informed and engaged in your child’s school in 2017? Here are some ways to do this at Yorktown:
* The Yorktown website is a great resource: https://yhs.apsva.us/. Find the school events calendar, teachers’ email addresses, details about programs and activities, and much more. For Yorktown athletics, visit http://www.yorktownsports.org/.
* The Yorktown Sentry is the student-run newspaper: http://yorktownsentry.com/. The latest edition includes a story on the Dream Project, volunteer and holiday activities, and an opinion piece on student club meetings during Patriot Period.
* “The Yorktown Dailies” is a broadcast program that brings YHS news and short features to classrooms each morning. Highlighted this week are girls basketball and the challenges of wrestling: https://vimeo.com/yorktownconnections
* Choose from several Yorktown Twitter handles or follow them all for the latest updates and pictures! These include: @YorktownHS, @yhssports, @DrPasiYHS, @YorktownSentry and @yorktownbands.
* And of course, there is the Yorktown PTA—find meeting agendas, minutes, the budget, past newsletters and more at www.YHSPTA.org. To get more involved, use the EZ form and become a PTA member, share this message with a parent who is not yet subscribed for the weekly updates, and join us for our next meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, January 23, in the Yorktown library. All are welcome!

SCIENCE FAIR JUDGES NEEDED FOR YHS SCIENCE FAIR
Do you have any friends or associates with a science background? We could use your help in locating Science Fair judges. A science fair judge needs three things: (1) to be available on January 28, 2017 from 7:30am to noon; (2) to be familiar with the basic scientific principles, scientific method of experimentation, and hopefully statistics (the last one is a wish!); and (3) to have an open mind, kind heart and really want to interface with teens--that is the KEY to a great scientist being a super judge! One additional note: Parents who have students in the fair are not always the best options--in fact, we try NOT to have judges who have kids in the fair, because not only could they run into their own, but their kid's friends. It gets sticky. If you can help with judge recruitment in anyway please contact Michelle Buehlmann via email. MichelleBuehlmann@hotmail.com.
