An Encouraging Word...

Filled by the Spirit Daily

Being filled with the Spirit is a phrase which has captivated Christians for centuries.  Last Sunday in Worship we discussed what it meant to be filled by the Spirit and I tried to provide a few helpful ways we can pursue a deeper relationship with the Spirit in our lives.  (You can click here to listen to the sermon online.)

One thing I failed to mention Sunday is that in the original Greek language, the word for “filled” is a continuous verb, meaning that it’s something that is supposed to happen in an ongoing fashion.  Many of us have probably had an infusion of the Spirit’s presence in our lives at a worship service, a retreat, or a private devotional time, only to have the power of that experience sucked out of us when we encounter the rigors of daily life.  So how do we continue to be filled by the Spirit?

Well, another thing I failed to mention yesterday is a different method of praying that involves short, very direct and focused prayers to the Spirit as we go about our day.  One of my favorite of these prayers is “Lord, lead me to your redemption now.”  This helps me orient myself to what the Spirit might be doing where I am, whether it is at home, work, or while I am on the road.  Or, you might try asking the Spirit, “What would you like to do in me and through me now?”  Prayers that are questions give free reign to the Spirit to move as He sees fit.  I like to call these kinds of prayers “Redemption Prayers”, only because redemption is my buzz word of the month.  So give this kind of praying a shot in your own life, and sees where the Spirit leads you.
