An Encouraging Word...
When I graduated from college, I did some telemarketing for a few months, hawking Credit Cards. I’m not really the kind of person that excels at selling things. I hate imposing on people, which you inevitably do as a telemarketer. And I didn’t exactly believe in the product I was selling. Suffice to say, I did not sign many people up for Credit Cards.
I mention my record as a Telemarketer because every time September rolls around, I feel a little bit like a salesman again. This time, I’m not signing people up for credit cards, I’m signing people up for Small Groups. And while I still don’t like imposing on people, or feeling pushy, I do believe in the product. I am fully convinced that you will be blessed if you join a small group.
For years now at First Baptist Church we’ve been encouraging people to join small groups. Small Groups are bible studies that meet in people’s houses. We’ve invested a lot of time and effort in these groups because we think people grow more in their walk with Jesus when they become connected to other people and study scripture and pray together. We think that the relational and scriptural focus of small groups lies at the heart of what God has called the church to be and do. Conversely, our growth as Christians is stunted when we try to follow Christ on our own. We believe it really is that simple.
So join a small group this fall for our “Beyond the Law” series (click here to download the study guide), as we take a new look at some very old commands. The small group studies will track along with the sermon series that starts this Sunday, September 19. We are currently offering five different groups (see sidebar). Meet some new people or really get to know some people you’ve already met.
So could I have persuaded you in one paragraph to join a small group? Maybe not. If you’re interested, but need some further direction, give me a call at the church (631-6372) or e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
