An Encouraging Word...

Like the advertisements for Golds Horseradish Sauce, people new to First Baptist Church occasionally ask, “What’s with that bell?”  Affixed to the post in the northeast corner (the back part) of the sanctuary is a big bell.  About eleven years ago, the attendance at Sunday School was dwindling, so the elders devised a way to get more people in Sunday School.

We worked backward from the established habit.  Since virtually everyone came regularly to Sunday worship, we decided that more people would attend Sunday School if we scheduled it after the worship service.  So for several years, Sunday School followed morning worship.

The idea worked.  Sunday School attendance grew.  Many who came to worship were willing to stay for Sunday School.  But we discovered a new problem.  People got so caught up in their conversations after church that it was hard to get their attention to move to their respective Sunday School classes.  So Roger Brooks, one of the elders at the time, bolted a big bell to the post in the back of the church.

A few years ago it was decided to again change the schedule and put Sunday School back before worship.  Though it is hardly noticed now, you can still find the old bell bolted to the arch in the back of the sanctuary.

Modern technology has provided us with a new and improved Bellpost to focus people’s attention.  These weekly updates are intended to help communicate what’s happening at FBC.  We hope you find them far more informative and much less annoying than an old clanging bell.
