A Few Chords from the President

All the while that SPRUKE is evolving, the BUMS management committee has also been preparing for its next big event which is the AGM to be held at 6:30 pm on Wednesday 30 October, at the Coorparoo Bowls Club. Financial members, here's an opportunity for you to have yet another strum. This year we plan to run jam sets either side of the very short AGM agenda. Only BUMS members may nominate and vote for the 12 or so committee positions. So get your membership updated if you haven’t already done so, put in your committee member nominations, and come along for a great time.

Congratulations to recent raffle prize winners: John Campbell was warm for the final days of winter as the winner of the Get Red-y for Winter raffle, courtesy of Music Express and the creative crochet talent of our BUMS Inc Vice President, Amanda Allwood. The lucky winner of our Sprukestar Raffle was Brett Mosedale. Thank you to our sponsors Guitar Brothers for the fabulous Gretsch Resontor ukulele with gig bag. Brett is one happy BUM!

Readers will know that BUMS has several community bands which perform around the Brisbane region, often for free. These community bands are supported by BUMS in a number of ways, including providing audio equipment and covering the cost of room hire for rehearsals. Even though they're busy practising for SPRUKE, and helping with festival preparations, it's still business as usual for bands.

On the Northside we have NUMB BUMS, which during August alone had performances for the Petrie Meals On Wheels service, for the AVEO Clayfield community, and for the Probus Club at Mitchelton. Another Northside group,  Ukulele Saints, have been busy at the Pullenvale community market and the Brookfield Market's “Christmas in July” event.

On the Southside, The CAGE has had a number of gigs including the Corinda State School fete during July, and a community event in Moorooka. The CAGE has also invited you all to join them at Kangaroo Point for Play Music on the Porch Day on Saturday 31 August 2019, starting at about 10:30 am.

SPRUKE is just around the corner. The bands have been rehearsing,  the committee has been checking last minute activities, signposts, tickets, tents, marquees, the stage is planned, the seating is being ticketed and the festival is coming together with a bang. The very exciting new venue for SPRUKE looks ready to live up to its expectations, and spaces for all of performers and events are programmed.
August has been finals month for the Guitar Brothers Sprukestar Quest. Congratulations to winner of semi-final 1, Chan Hoo, and winner of semi-final 2, Jemima Moore. Both performed for the Final at Northside Jam, the audience voted and we have our winner. Our Sprukestar wins a $500 gift voucher and the runner-up $250 Gift voucher. You'll have to come to the Morris Brothers Festival Finale on Sunday 15 September at SPRUKE to find out! Both our finalists will perform again, the winner will be announced and the prizes awarded.

This year we are delighted to announce that the radio station 4KQ breakfast team of Laurel, Gary and Mark will be highlighting SPRUKE in the week leading up to the festival, promoting the event with a special focus on ukulele versions of their popular fifties, sixties and seventies airplay. Tune in for a fun time and a chance to win prizes.

How did Kine Kool originate? What's the philosophy behind the band? What are the lessons learned? We asked band leader, and long-term BUMS member, Jim Bills. Here's the answers.

More About That Bass

Mark Kryle's workshop was a booming success. They came from near and far, had vastly different levels of experience, but all thought it was well worth it. Here's what Rob Soothill and John Low said.
