G-O2™ Living Walls Help Make
Greenest Building in Raleigh
Plant Connection’s G-O2™ Living Walls were used to help make the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) building the "greenest" complex in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina. The green walls represent one of many components of the Green Square Complex that illustrate the most current sustainable design strategies. The Green Square Complex is a two-block, multi-use sustainable development project composed of two "green" buildings. Some of the other green and cost-efficient elements used include maximizing the use of natural sunlight, conservation of water, environmentally friendly construction, and using locally produced building materials.

The living walls at DENR were designed to be “multidimensional,” meaning they wrap around some of the wall sides, if not all. In order to achieve this look, Plant Connection manufactured custom panels. The living wall along Jones Street spans approximately 35 feet with vegetation continuing around the entire wall.

This design element provides a beautiful visual experience for visitors not only entering the building via the stairs, but for those who need to access the ramp. Additionally, a “window” was incorporated into the wall to encourage visitors to see through to the other side. A plant palette of hardy perennials, ferns, grasses and groundcovers envelope the wall for seasonal interest.

The second living wall on the project is located in a space that offers sitting areas and was designed to creatively conceal the waste management area. It covers two sides of the wall and greets visitors entering the space. Its plant palette is of the same theme as the wall on Jones Street.

The Green Square Complex will enable North Carolina's state environmental offices and a nationally significant Nature Research Center to promote stewardship by example to the general public, while providing experiential learning opportunities focused on the current scientific research and environmental issues affecting our daily lives. It is hoped that the Green Square Complex will serve as a national model of environmental efficiency and sustainability.
