G-O2™ Living Wall Enhances Biophilic Design
Many of our living walls are used in environments to either aid in contributing to sustainable building solutions, or to create esthetical living works of art. At the Herrick’s Community Center Sensory Garden, a green wall was specially designed into the space to produce healing benefits for Alzheimer’s patients.
Visitors at the new Sensory Garden are immediately drawn to the Green Wall.
Known as biophilic design, this practice incorporates elements derived from nature in order to maximize human function and health. Scientific studies have shown that including gardens in health care design has a restorative effect for both faculty and patients. Whether in a garden setting or dispersed throughout a building, natural forms provide an oasis from stress.
Permascape Designs, an ecological Landscape Design/Install/Maintenance company, specializes in Green Roofs, Green Walls, Healing Spaces, and Green Interiors. They created the Sensory Garden at the Herrick’s Community Center and felt that implementing a G-O2 Living Wall would be a great addition. Not only does the wall visually pull you into the space, it also encourages you to want to touch it.
Permascape Designs created the Herrick's Sensory Garden and felt the addition of a green wall would beautifully harmonize with the entire design.
Introducing biophilic design was Landscape Designer Mark Scaramucci’s goal in the space because it has been proven that nature promotes and aids in healing. Biophilic design creates a therapeutic and productive habitat to all that use the space.
After successful installation of the green wall by Mark Scaramucci and colleague Sean Curry, a garden fundraiser was held in October to introduce the new Sensory Garden. The Herrick’s Community Center is a great project that demonstrates how green spaces can contribute to promoting years of healing.
“Gardens can not only bring balance and harmony to a space, but also provide a therapeutic platform in the rehabilitation of specific populations - such as, providing a space for reminiscence and recreation for those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other populations,” says Mark Scaramucci.
