Community Garden Grows
Vertical Veggies

On what was the hottest day of the year on record, a dedicated group of people joined together to install a vertical living wall within a community's already flourishing garden in downtown Riverhead.

The green wall reads within its foliage ‘RRCG’, the garden's initials for River & Roots Community Garden. It was installed by Anthony Caggiano, Melissa Daniels, and Sabrina Buttitta of Plant Connection, Inc.

Amy Davidson, co-founder of the community garden said she first heard about the vertical gardens when she saw them and Plant Connection on News 12 last year. Since then she has kept the idea in the back of her mind, waiting for the community garden to become established. She then reached out to the company about donating the living wall.

"The wall is beautiful and practical." said Davidson "The community garden has been great for downtown and the living wall adds to its beauty."

The wall was designed to illustrate all the possibilities of plants that can grow in a green wall, while providing the community garden with another means for food production, combined with aesthetical qualities. Growing throughout the living wall are vegetables, herbs, annuals, perennials, and even watermelon!  The vertical garden has its own irrigation system to ensure proper and consistent watering.

River and Roots Community Garden's purpose is to promote, create, and sustain community gardening in downtown Riverhead, NY. Within a few short months of installing and planting the raised beds, the once empty lot has transformed into a lush garden of fruits, vegetables, and herbs with accents of various annuals.

Interiorscape Conference & Trade Show
Visit us at this year's PIA expo on August 30 - September 1 in Las Vegas, NV!

The Plantscape Industry Alliance (PIA) is an organization of professionals who design, install and maintain plants in the interior environment. Dedicated to bringing nature indoors, we advocate the use of living plants in interior landscapes to enhance human well-being. Living plants are an aesthetic improvement to any indoor area, and function to remove air pollutants from the interior environment.
