February newsletter

The National Autistic Society Guernsey Branch

Febraury newsletter

Welcome to our February newsletter...better late than never!

The year has begun in its usual busy way for the Branch. We had a visit from Dean Beadle at the beginning of the month. Our thanks go to (GALSA) the Guernsey Association for Learning Support Assistants who organised Dean's travel and arranged a talk for school staff which was well attended. We then ran a morning session which was attended by families and professionals.

We must thank  Carey Olsen who have handed over a final cheque for £3,527.88 which has now ended our charity partnership with them. Their support, both financially and in practical terms, has allowed us to run many training and social events.

Finally, we are delighted that our Branch was shortlisted in the NAS Staff & Volunteer Awards 2015. There are over 100 NAS Branches across the UK, and so to have our work recognised is a wonderful achievement to us. A big thanks must go out to whoever nominated us - we are hugely appreciative!

We shall shortly be sending out details for our AGM - it is that time of the year when we aim to recruit a few new members either to our committee or fundraising and events team!

New Books

We have just ordered around 30 new books for the Branch library. These will be available on our drop in Sundays (see below for dates) and at some other Branch events. Once they arrive we will update our library list on our website.

Could we use this opportunity to ask you to have a look at home for any books that you may have on loan which could now be returned.

Branch Events Diary

Sensory Sundays at Styx (fortnightly)

Next Dates:  Sunday 21st February, Sunday 20th March (Please note there will be no session on 6th March - Mothers Day)

Western Community Centre, (Styx) St Peters

2.00-4.00pm

For those of you who have not been along on a Sunday before, it is a great opportunity to drop in and meet some of our committee members and other families.
We get out a range of our sensory equipment which you can try out before borrowing (if you wish). We also set up a sensory based activity, ranging from sand or water play to slime or playdoh.

Some children prefer to get the Lego out or do something arts and crafty and there is also the Styx playground to use. Most importantly we put on the kettle and provide biscuits! Our books are also available to browse and borrow.

Half Term Activities

Tuesday 23rd February - Coffee Morning at Styx (Western Community Centre)
10am-12pm

We have booked the Pine Room at Styx for a drop in coffee morning. We shall get out toys/Lego and crafts and there is also the playground if the weather is dry.

Please let us know via email info@nasguernsey.com if you plan on coming along, just so that we can get an idea of expected numbers.

Friday 26th February - Bowling
10am at MFA Bowl, Victoria Avenue

Come and join us for a game of bowling during Half Term. This is a great way to try out bowling for the first time in a friendly and supportive group, or if you have been before, it is a good way to keep everyone entertained for a part of the school holiday week and meet up with other famliies from the Branch!

We have booked 3 lanes from 10am and will limit it to 4 children bowling per lane to ensure that there is not too much waiting about. If there is sufficient demand we can increase the number of lanes or offer a later time slot.

The Bowl can be quite a noisy environment, and although the management have agreed to lower or turn off the music for us, any children with auditory sensitivity may find that wearing ear defenders or ear plugs makes it easier and more enjoyable. If you think these may help but do not have a pair of your own, please get in touch as we have a couple of pairs of ear defenders that we can loan out for the event.

Siblings and friends are very welcome to come along as well.

£4 per child

To book tickets please visit Eventbrite

Please note: There is no need to print out your tickets as we will have a list of those people who have booked with us on the day

Saturday 27th February - Jumping
1.30-2.30pm at St Sampsons High School

Come and join us for a session of Jumping with Dana from Pure FunFit Guernsey.

If you have not been along to these sessions before, they involve each person jumping on their own mini trampoline to music. There is plenty of dancing and fun high energy games, but Dana always involves the children and goes along with their interests and preferences.

Children are welcome to join in or take a break as they need to, and accompanying adults are welcome to join in the fun too!

Open to all ages - from a recommended age 3-4 years upwards

Siblings and friends are very welcome to come along as well

We will try and make the music a comfortable volume, but some children with auditory sensitivity may find that wearing ear defenders or ear plugs make the activity more enjoyable. We do have a couple of pairs of ear defenders to loan for events, so please let us know if you would like to try a pair.

Please wear trainers and comfortable clothes and bring along a drinks bottle.

£4 per child (payable on the day in cash or cheques payable to 'NAS Guernsey' please)

To book tickets please visit Eventbrite

Please note: There is no need to print out your tickets as we will have a list of those people who have booked with us on the day
