What's a Wicker Bill?

A wicker bill is a thin, raised edge that changes the way the air flows across the wing on a sprint car.  It is mounted across the back edge of the top wing.  The larger (taller) the wicker bill, the greater the down force.  Most series and tracks limit the maximum allowable height of the wicker bill to 2 inches.

TALES FROM THE CAR WASH

The goal of this section of our newsletter is to share some entertaining, funny and surprising stories.  These tales don't always originate from the late night car wash stop most team's make...but the car wash is often where the stories become lore among race teams.

Fumble at the 1!

All football fans have seen it happen at least once.  Sure of the touchdown he is about to score, the player begins his celebration just a little too early and karma pays him back immediately by ensuring the touchdown doesn't happen and they player suffers a tad of embarrassment instead.  Well, believe it or not, it can happen in racing too.

Several years ago, during his karting days, one member of #TeamA2D was participating in a 3-race series in Pennsylvania called Extreme Speed Weekend.  He had won the series in previous years based on points average but had not won a race during those championships.  This year, he wanted to remedy that.

Not only did he win a race, he was dominating the series.  He had won at Selinsgrove and at Penns Creek.  On the final night, he was again dominant and was on the verge of another series championship.  He was leading the feature event when a caution flag waved with 3 laps to go.  He focused everything on getting the restart right and finishing off the series sweep.  He got the first part right.  He executed the perfect restart and pulled away from the field.

The second part didn't go exactly as planned.  As he navigated turns 3 and 4 for the final time coming to the checkered flag, he raised his finger high in the air, making sure everyone knew he was #1.  Turns out, one hand on the wheel wasn't quite enough.  He lost his focus for a split second, slid up the track, and off the edge into the sawdust on the plateau above the racing groove.  That darn karma is always perched and ready, isn't it?

He managed to save it...but only in time to finish second.  He had still won the championship, but that hardly seemed to be what would be remembered.  Which member of #TeamA2D hid in his trailer after the race instead of celebrating his championship?  We'll let you investigate that on your own.  Stop by the pits and ask them.
