President’s Message

Our first two ‘In Person’ meetings in 18 months went better than expected. We began our Club participation at Ferris High School at the first meeting. Many thanks to Ron Valley for his earlier mentoring at Ferris, as that clearly led to his ease in arranging the use of the wood shop for our meetings … and our third Saturday event. Thank You Ron.

Meeting #1 was held as in-person only with Damon doing a yeoman job on short notice demonstrating four different cuts with a Bowl gouge. We had about 30 Club members in attendance. The wood raffle had a lot of available wood with very few takers. Those that had raffle tickets really made out.

We skipped the 3rd Saturday event in September, because of a personnel conflict and went right on to our October meeting where Ron Gooley talked about and demonstrated many sharpening techniques. Ron was very well received, and I got many complimentary comments from member in attendance. Jacob Calmia stepped up and operated the hand-held camera so all could see how Ron was sharpening different tools.

On November 4, we will be welcoming Cindy Drozda, by Zoom ONLY, as our monthly demonstrator. This is a ‘paid’ event, and if you have not purchased her demonstration you will not be able to participate. Cindy does not record her demos and does not allow anyone to record them. This event is open to Club members and adopted club members only. The fee is $10.00 and the cut-off time for the event is November 3 @ 6:00 PM PDT (the PDT was added for adopted clubs in the Mountain time zone).

Damon will host a ‘mentoring’ session on November 13 @ 10:00 AM for any who wish to participate. The upcoming December 2, meeting @ Ferris will be a Tool Exchange and Sale along with the Club annual election of officers and Board members. Just as a reminder and for your consideration the election slate as proposed by the 2021 BoD is:

a. President Vacant
b. Vice-President Ron Valley
c. Secretary Vacant
d. Treasurer Carl Bodenstein
e. Board members - Select 4 from below:
     1. John Altberg
     2. Don Scott
     3. Pete Erhardt
     4. Shelley Hayes
     5. Marianne Patton
     6. Gene Turner
     7. Ron Gooley – Past President

If everyone brings pieces to show and share it will be a great wrap-up to a trying year(s).

The Inland Northwest Woodturners is a volunteer organization

Everything is performed by members who give of their time to conduct the business and activities of the organization. Besides helping to promote woodturning, volunteers also develop friendships by working alongside their fellow woodturners and you can learn new skills as well.

Volunteering is not time consuming. Board members spend 6-10 hours a month on their duties but most volunteers only contribute at meetings or special events. For example, the video assistant is responsible for setting up and operating the video equipment during our regular monthly meetings. It usually takes less than a half hour to set up before the meeting and 15 minutes to take down after the meeting - and the rest of the time is during the meeting - and you’re already at the meeting!
