Member Business Hightlight: Hug Hes Cafe
"You are in a country where if you work hard enough, you can accomplish it. There is nobody going to hold you back except yourself."
Blake Hawkins started working in the restaurant industry after graduating from BYU with a degree in finance. He gained knowledge and skills while working for two large restaurant chains. Then, in 1988, he opened Hug Hes Cafe in Ogden.
Starting from ground level without any name recognition was extremely tough. However, with determination, and relying on his industry experience, the small business began to progress.
"If you have a certain skill set you want to develop, go work for a company that has a matching skill set. You'll get a better understanding. I'm someone who believes in following your dream."
Blake's philosophy of trying things out and gaining skills can even be seen in his restaurant practices. "When we get a new idea, we run it as a special. If it goes well and people really want it, we add it on the menu permanently. The special board is really our laboratory to try things out and get opinions."
When asked about owning a business, Blake recites a list of challenges, but then explains about the freedom of succeeding or failing by what you decide and not somebody else. He also mentions the freedom of adjusting his schedule to attend the athletic events of his children. To Blake, money isn't everything; attending important family events has the most value.
