The dozen state-owned major ports in the country have switched to renewable energy to meet their entire power requirements, making India the first nation to have all government-owned ports running on solar and wind energy. Under a ‘green port’ initiative, the Shipping Ministry had directed all the major ports to install grid-connected and roof-top solar and wind power projects to facilitate day-to-day operations including supplying shore-power to visiting ships in an eco-friendly manner.
India’s renewable energy (RE) sector seems to be losing steam, even as the total capacity has reached almost 86 GW by December 2019, says the latest State of India’s Environment Annualreport, released here at the 2020 Annual Media Conclave and Anil Agarwal Dialogue. India has set itself atarget of 175 gigaWatt (GW) RE capacity by 2022 -- mainly in the form of 100 GW solar (60 GW utility-scale and 40 GW rooftop) and 60 GW wind. Between 2014 and 2018, the RE sector grew from 2.6 GW to 28 GW -- a cumulative aggregated growth rate of around 18 per cent.
Lucknow and Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh and Pune and Nashik in Maharashtra will launch the Clean Air Project in India (CAP India) initiative to improve air quality in their cities. This project will be implemented by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in partnership with city authorities. CAP India was announced at the World Sustainable Development Summit 2020 being held in New Delhi.
Pump manufacturers from the city say they have little to cheer about the announcement in Union Budget that the central government would provide funds to 20 lakh farmers to set up solar pumps. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced in the Union Budget on February 1 that the Centre, under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Utthan Mahabhiyan (PM Kusum) scheme, would provide funds to 20 lakh farmers to set up stand-alone solar pumps.

For the December 2019 quarter, electric two-wheeler sales grew 22 per cent at 4,944 units when compared with 4,046 units in the year-ago period. E-rickshaw sales zoomed to 1,565 units from 385 units in December 2018 quarter. For the nine-month period, electric two-wheeler sales stood at 13,358 units, posting a growth of 23 per cent.
Electric three-wheelers or e-rickshaws that have become the face of electric mobility in India are set to corner about 50 per cent of all three-wheelers sold in the country as early as 2024, according to a report by Crisil Research. Electrification will also gain traction in two-wheelers in the next 4 years accounting for about 12-17 per cent of all new two-wheeler sales, but traction in four-wheelers will be slow with only 5 per cent of new car sales estimated to be electric.

A large number of solar equipment suppliers and manufacturers have urged Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) to scrap grid support charge (GSC) proposed by MSEDCL on solar rooftop consumers. Vanamati hall, where the commission held a public hearing on MSEDCL’s power tariff hike petition, was jam-packed on Tuesday and most of the consumers were solar players. The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) has proposed astronomical GSC, which if approved by the MERC, will make solar power costlier than the discom power.
In its drive to promote more & more adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in the country, state-owned Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) has issued a new tender for the procurement of electric cars (e-cars). As per the tender details, EESL will procure 1,000 e-cars with extended range above 180 Km as per the ARAI. These electric cars must be having a warranty period of three years along with three years of comprehensive AMC.
