Dear Friends,

Our world is changing as we hopefully move towards the end of the pandemic that has defined everything we do for the last year and a half. There are many conflicting directions and opinions, and it is a challenge to figure out how to move forward.  So, what do we do about this coming Sunday in worship?

This Sunday, I am going to wear red and a mask.
I am wearing red because this Sunday is Pentecost, and we celebrate the fire of the Holy Spirit surrounding the fearful followers of Jesus. We typically wear colors that are in a fire as part of making a connection to the movement of God on Pentecost Sunday.

I am wearing a mask because…
  • Although I am fully vaccinated, I stand in solidarity with those who are in the process of being vaccinated and need to continue to wear a mask to be compliant with CDC requirements. I do not want anyone to feel awkward about wearing a mask because they could not get a vaccination yet.
  • I am wearing a mask to protect those who are at high risk of still catching COVID.
  • I am wearing a mask to protect our children who have not been vaccinated yet.
  • I am wearing a mask to protect our children who are too young to be vaccinated.
  • I am wearing a mask so that I can safely sing in worship.
  • I am wearing a mask so that I can safely visit people in nursing homes and hospitals.
Finally, I am wearing a mask because it helps keep me healthy.  I typically have three really bad respiratory infections each year and I recently noticed that I haven’t been sick with those infections since I started wearing a mask.

I am also going to maintain social distance to help us bring a final end to this pandemic.
The Lafayette Park UMC Safety team met and has established guidelines for returning to worship.  You will notice that you do not have to make a reservation to attend worship in person anymore. (You can always catch us on Facebook, even after worship is over.) 😊

Please check out the guidelines and see you on Sunday – wear red and join me in wearing a mask too.

Love you,
Pastor Kathleen
