Greetings,

It is a pleasure to feature the important work of grantees and partners in our 2011 Annual Report. The Unfolding Story focuses on impact that can "unfold" for years to come. We spotlight a grantee whose successful efforts are now being replicated across the Carolinas; another whose years of research didn’t just attract attention, but sustainability through broader investment; and a college whose innovative approaches are allowing students to start life on their own debt-free. We are excited that their work continues to serve and strengthen the people and communities of the Carolinas.

Even as we celebrate the successes of 2011, The Duke Endowment continues to mourn the loss of two irreplaceable leaders—Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans, grand-niece of James B. Duke and Trustee for 55 years, and Neil Williams Jr., our former Board Chair. We join with family and friends in honoring their service and remembering their legacy.

We hope you'll learn more about what’s unfolding in North Carolina and South Carolina by viewing our online Annual Report featuring stories, videos and financial information.

Sincerely,

Gene Cochrane
President
