Chocolate chip cookies,
straight from the oven--gooey and hot.
Gramma's square chocolate chip cookiesFresh-ground coffee. Newly-mown hay. A sprig of lavender rolled between your fingers. Lemon peel grated to a fine zest. Take your time. Read through the list again.
There's something distinct and memorable evoked by each one, isn't there.
At this time of year, when the pine scent and warm glow of Christmas have faded from my home, I feel a bit empty. The world's turned from celebrating, back to the daily-ness of life again. Here in the Midwest, this includes riding out what remains of a long winter. It's during this time between Christmas and spring, I feel a restlessness. It's like there's a void that needs filled. Do you feel that way, too?
A few years ago, I went for a walk on a brisk January afternoon. I passed a specialty shop where I buy my wall calendar every year and decided to stop in. A coffee aroma, sweetened with a hint of toffee crunch, greeted me at the door. I dropped every notion of dashing in and dashing back out again.
No, I was drawn further into the shop, but, curiously, not toward the calendars. I was beckoned, rather, by a delectable mingling of scents. Each with absolutely delicious names: Christmas Cupcake, Blueberry Scone and Apple Spice. French Vanilla, Garden Lavender and Sunrise Cinnamon Bun. I wandered amidst this sea of aroma and felt soothed and refreshed.
Finally, I pulled the Apple Spice jar candle close to my face, inhaling a fragrance that sent me over the edge. Exactly what I'd been restless for: a special fragrance to fill my home.

I headed back out into the snow with my purchase tucked under my arm. I crunched, crunched happily along, but then stopped--for I noticed that even though I had traveled far from the shop, it's sumptuous scents were still swirling around me.
I smiled. My coat, gloves and scarf--even my hair--were rich with aroma of all things wonderful. Ah yes, life seemed to have a glow again. My sense of restlessness was gone.

I thought: Isn't this how my walk with God should be. Fragrant with the Spirit and with God's Word living and working in me.  Like the aromas of that little shop, I'd never have carried its fragrance into my day had I not spent time "lingering within."

Have you lingered in God's Word today, savoring it and drinking it in with an eagerness to have it flavor your every step along life's way?

"But thanks be to God, who leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him."            ~ II Corinthians 2:14 ~ [NIV]
Story about a wonderful fragranceI have to share this with you.
Right in the middle of writing this devotion I had to stop, run over to that same little shop and get my annual dose of Apple Spice goodness! Wish you could be here to share the warm glow and delicious fragrance with me.
