NFL Kickoff 2019: NBC Debuts New Canon Lens for Opener, Plans More Dual Skycams for SNF

The NFL kicks off its 100th season tonight with Packers-Bears from Soldier Field. And NBC Sports Group is celebrating their 14th season of Sunday Night Football with a massive show that features the debut of Canon’s yet-to-be-released CJ15ex4.3B 4K broadcast lens on a Steadicam rig.
Networks Beef Up Football Audio

Audio for football games has reached a pinnacle, at least technically. The ability to pull in sound from the gridiron — from microphones on players to parabolic receptors with sensitivity a CIA spook would respect — is just short of reality-show pervasiveness. The only brakes on collecting sound during games are legal ones, a combination of league dicta, collective-bargaining agreements, and collegiate regulations. The incipient 2019-20 NFL and collegiate seasons reflect both boundaries and accomplishments but also demonstrate how other audio technologies are making themselves felt on the field.
Jay-Z Deal With NFL Puts Rap at Top of Sports’ Playlist

The partnership between rapper/entrepreneur Jay-Z’s Roc Nation company and the NFL, announced on Aug. 13, underscores the deepening integration between sports and music as complementary entertainment propositions. And just as music venues have been adapting to accommodate changes in musical genres and styles, the new Jay-Z/NFL deal will have the same effect on football stadiums.

Live From the US Open: ESPN’s Jamie Reynolds Talks Production Philosophy, Ratings Boost

As ESPN enters the homestretch at the US Open — its largest production of the year — the broadcaster’s monumental production efforts look to be paying off. After 10 days of Open coverage, ESPN's 1.0 average overnight rating is up 25% from 0.8 a year ago. In total, more than 600 people (some onsite since mid July) are working to deliver more than 1,300 hours of content (including 160 hours on linear TV) from all 16 courts to ESPN’s various platforms. SVG sat down with ESPN VP, Production, Jamie Reynolds at the Open this week to chat about ESPN’s massive operation.
