Blizzard Entertainment Takes Live Esports Broadcast to New Heights With Launch of Call of Duty League

Esports has had the sports-video–production community’s attention for some time now, with much of the hype built around mega championship-style events that pack major arenas: events like Fortnite World Cup, League of Legends World Championship, and many more. Now the question remains, can the format do it on a regular basis with a more formatted structure? The new Call of Duty League is the latest venture to take a swing at answering that question.

 
At Twitch Rivals Streamer Bowl in Miami, Football Meets Fortnite

Although the big game didn’t take place in Miami until Sunday night, the main event when it comes to esports kicked off on Friday with the Twitch Rivals Streamer Bowl. Twitch teamed up with the NFLPA to create a pro-am–style Fortnite tournament, which featured 16 duo teams (each consisting of one Twitch streamer and one NFL player), that streamed live from Miami’s Ice Palace Studios during the NFLPA’s Player Party.

 
EA Broadcast Center Celebrates Inaugural Year With Madden NFL 20 Challenge

While 102 million NFL football fans had their eyes fixed on Miami for Super Bowl LIV last weekend, Madden gaming fans were tuned in to their own main event 3,000 miles away: the Madden NFL 20 Challenge at the EA Broadcast Center in Redwood City, CA. The three-day live production (Jan. 30–Feb. 1), which featured 16 top players competing for their share of $190,000, marked the culmination of the EA Broadcast Center’s inaugural year, having launched during the 2019 Challenge last March.
