ESPN Shines Spotlight on Coco, Preps for Five-Week US Open Run

The Wimbledon Tennis Championships were filled with dramatic storylines for ESPN throughout the three-week tournament. Right out of the gate, 15-year-old American Coco Gauff upset Venus Williams and had a week for the ages before losing in the round of 16. For the production team, it let them innovate and help out ABC News and Good Morning America.
ESPN’s Jamie Reynolds on the Challenges in Broadcasting a Grand Slam

The two finals at Wimbledon shaped up to be epic battles between arguably the biggest names in the sport. That was just fine with Jamie Reynolds, VP, production, ESPN, and nearly everyone else in the Wimbledon Broadcast Centre, portending great interest and ratings. Reynolds took a few minutes out of his schedule to speak with SVG Editorial Director Ken Kerschbaumer about this year’s tournament, the current season, the challenge of broadcasting a Tennis Grand Slam event, and what lies ahead for the ESPN team as it gears up for the US Open in August.

BBC Sport Goes for Ubiquitous Tennis Coverage, Complex Storytelling at Wimbledon

After the massive changes made to broadcasting services last year at Wimbledon Championships by Wimbledon Broadcast Services (WBS), this year BBC Sport expanded on its coverage, both in quantity and quality. Ron Chakraborty, lead executive, major events, BBC Sport, spoke to SVG Europe at Wimbledon about how BBC Sport’s tests last year with UHD grew this year.

Game, Set, and Match to WBS With Second Championships as Host Broadcaster

One year on from Wimbledon Broadcast Services’ (WBS) successful debut as host broadcaster for the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) annual Championships, the atmosphere is far more relaxed. After taking over from the BBC’s 90-year run as host last year, WBS settled comfortably into its role after the mammoth project that saw a multi-million-pound rebuild of the broadcast center and update of all services for the 2018 Championships, working with technical partner NEP.

NEP Efforts Drive WBS, ESPN Productions

This year’s Wimbledon tournament marked year two of a four-year relationship between Wimbledon Broadcast Services (WBS) and NEP, whereby the former provided technical gear and engineering services for the tournament. And, although the second year of a deal can occasionally see some major changes and overhauls, the Wimbledon technical plan saw only minor alterations because the initial efforts last year were forward-thinking, embracing such technologies as ST 2110, UHD, and HDR.

Inside Eurosport’s Multinational Effort

When it comes to Grand Slam tennis production, Eurosport has a lot of mouths to feed. There are the needs of an international signal distributed across Europe in more than 20 languages and regional Eurosport channels that want to deliver a more tailored experience for viewers. And, although its Wimbledon footprint, with more than 70 people, may be smaller than at the other Slams (most notably because of the lack of a true physical studio presence), the network met the needs of viewers across Europe.

Taking Social Media Further With Wimbledon Digital

For the 2019 Championships, Wimbledon Digital, the social media team for the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), launched a daily live show for social platforms, a move that coincided with a concerted effort to improve workflow efficiencies from last year. Wimbledon Digital was also integrated more tightly with the Wimbledon Broadcast Services (WBS), the in-house department that took over as host broadcaster for the Championships last year.
