May 2018 E-Newsletter

Food Allergy Awareness Week
Food Allergy Awareness Week is upon us for 2018 – 13th to 19th May.

This year for the first time we joined with Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia to conduct an Australasian online survey of our combined allergy communities. We wanted to know what Kiwis and Australians’ perceptions of our food services were on both sides of the Tasman. We have been overwhelmed with the response to our 10 question survey of over 20,000 Australasian consumers, so firstly a  huge thank you to all our email subscribers who responded.

The data gathered makes for a riveting read and both organizations will release the highlights in Press Releases through our respective media channels next week, with the aim of attracting valuable media coverage during Food Allergy Awareness Week.

The timing of our survey is particularly valuable for New Zealand as our 2014 Food Act has introduced new regulations on food allergen management for food services to comply with. This year’s consumer responses will provide a useful benchmark to measure food service’s response to the legislation over the next few years. We plan to conduct the same survey next year to compare food industry uptake from an allergy consumer perspective

So, please keep an eye and an ear out for press coverage during the week commencing Sunday 13th May, and remember to ‘share’ articles and stories online!
At a more local level, our wonderful network of regional volunteers have been out and about in your communities providing and supporting allergy awareness activities at schools within their areas. Please remember if you have a strong relationship with your local school or perhaps even a classroom at your local school, Food Allergy Awareness Week is a great opportunity to raise awareness and promote some simple messages for good allergy management within school environments.

School mufti days, classroom bake days, being food-allergic for a day, watching and discussing a short YouTube video, like Ronchi Gupta "Kids Talk" video, are all great ways for non-allergic children to be allergy smart and support their friends. We also have free posters available on the Allergy NZ web site here.
Seen in the media this month

Allergy New Zealand CEO Mark Dixon spoke with Breakfast TVNZ to discuss managing food allergies on airplanes. The subject has made headlines recently after Singapore Airlines announced they would stop serving peanuts as snacks on their flights.
