Retrospective by Steve McCurry

A major retrospective exhibition by the internationally renowned photographer, Steve McCurry. Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery is proud to present the first and only UK exhibition of this critically acclaimed photojournalist. The exhibition will include over eighty striking images that span a remarkable twenty year career, including his world renowned portrait 'Afghan Girl'. Steve McCurry will also present his career in a gallery talk on 2nd July.

Five bodies of work by Burt Glinn, Leonard Freed, Jim Goldberg, Patrick Zachmann and Antoine D’Agata that expose the underbelly of street life in all its violence and passion. The streets have always been the site of seedier city activity where those that fall through, or drop out of society make their home.

Destroying The Laboratory For The Sake Of The Experiment by Mark Power

A collaborative exhibition between photographer Mark Power and award-winning poet Daniel Cockrill, exploring synergies between words and images. This multifaceted project began as an experiment where the two artists travelled together to different parts of England, sharing similar experiences but reacting independently. This unique work will dramatically transform the Atlas Gallery into a multi-media experience including photography, poetry and live performance.

Pandora's Box by Susan Meiselas

First commissioned to accompany the Nick Broomfield documentary "Fetishes", Meiselas's "Pandora's Box" is a darkly captivating journey into a high-class sex club that specializes in sado-masochism. The images, featuring a New York S&M club, are from Meisela's 2001 book of the same title. Through this series Meiselas portrays the sadomasochistic experience, in this Disneyland of domination, as beautiful, unnerving, and ultimately, self-reflexive.

Steele-Perkins' personal overview of his birthplace, England, over a remarkable forty year career. Steele-Perkins came to England from Burma in 1949 when he was two, the son of a Burmese mother and English father. A calm and unprejudiced account of England’s evolution into an ethnically diverse society.
