Take To The Streets

Take to the Streets presents a selection of seven of the agency’s most prolific social documentarists and celebrates the art of candid photography. The exhibition, produced for the Format International Photography Festival, provides visitors with an engaging way to view photographs, literally by bringing the exhibition to the street.

Head On by Bruce Gilden

Sometimes controversial but always interesting, Gilden has built a forty year career out of photographing strong characters and human peculiarities. A fearless New Yorker, Gilden’s Brooklyn upbringing has endowed him with a keen eye for observing urban behaviours and customs. In this new commission for the Format International Photography Festival, Gilden turns his lens to the street life and inhabitants of Derby, UK.

This Is Whitechapel by Ian Berry

In 1972 the Whitechapel Gallery wanted to document east London at a time of rapid social and economic change - much like today. The photographs commissioned from leading British Magnum photographer Ian Berry formed part of a major exhibition which is now brought vividly to life again through the Gallery’s archives of original photographs, letters and rarely-seen documents.

Libyan Crisis by Moises Saman

In mid-February, 2011, following the success of anti-government activists in Tunisia and Egypt, Libyans took to the streets to express displeasure with their government and its leader, Muammar Qaddafi. Magnum nominee Moises Saman has been documenting the uprising.

Photovoice lecture with Chris Steele-Perkins

Magnum photographer Chris Steele-Perkins will talk about his experience as a photographer whose career has moved between journalism and reportage to the pursuit of personal projects. Chris will touch on issues of truth, responsibility and the role of photojournalism today and share his diverse portfolio of images taken from all corners of the world from Brixton to Afghanistan to Japan.

Magnum Photos & Leica Camera announce partnership

Magnum Photos and Leica Camera AG have begun a technological and photographic collaboration that will build upon almost a century’s worth of shared history between these two world-renowned photographic institutions. Beginning in the Spring 2011, Leica will sponsor the creation of a series of multimedia essays that will take a deeper look into the stories behind the photographs.
